Tiffin, Ohio -- The ninth-ranked Wayne State University softball squad (38-9 overall, 14-4 GLIAC) suffered a
4-3 setback at Tiffin University (26-16 overall, 8-10 GLIAC) in the second game of Wednesday's conference twinbill.
Dragon ninth-place hitter Melodi Murrieta hit a 3-2 pitch with two outs in the top of the seventh over the left field fence propelling the hosts over the Warriors.
WSU took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second on a
Becca Ryan (Westland, Mich. / Dearborn Divine Child) leadoff double, a sacrifice bunt by
Stephanie LeClair (Kitchener, Ont. / Forest Heights C.I.) and an RBI single down the left field line by
Bailey Reid (Guelph, Ont. / Ross Collegiate V.I.).
TU tallied three runs in the top of the fourth on four hits and a WSU error. Meagan Baird scored all the way from second on a two-out infield single by Jessie Creakbaum.
The Warriors responded with two runs in the bottom of the fourth. Ryan homered to left to start the inning. After LeClair reached on a fielding error,
Steph Foreman (Cambridge, Ont. / Preston) had a bunt single. A walk to Reid loaded the bases, while a fielder's choice preceded a sacrifice fly by
Lauren Histed (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Utica).
The score remained 3-3 until the top of the seventh. In the bottom of the seventh,
Alison Allen (Redford, Mich. / Farmington Hills Mercy) reached with two outs on a dropped fly ball and
Jaci Banton (Richmond Hill, Ont. / Cardinal Carter) followed with a single to right advancing Allen to third. But the game ended on a pop out.
Casey Hanes (Richmond, Va. / Douglas Freeman) went the distance for WSU striking out five with no walks and allowing four runs (two earned) on five hits.
Amber Young earned the win for the Dragons. She struck out two and walked one while allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits.
Ryan went 2-for-3 with two runs scored to lead the Warriors.
WSU will play its final regular-season non-conference games on Thursday with a doubleheader at Detroit Mercy.
