Abel hurls three-hit shutout.

DETROIT (UDM Campus) -- The Wayne State University softball squad (40-9) completed a road doubleheader sweep at Detroit Mercy (3-31) with a 4-0 triumph in the second game of a twinbill Thursday afternoon.

WSU scored twice in the second and added two more runs in the third.

Steph Foreman (Cambridge, Ont. / Preston) led off the second with a single to center, stole second and scored on a Makelle Barski (Trenton, Mich.) single to left.  Barski, who had taken second on an error, scored on an RBI single to left center by Stephanie LeClair (Kitchener, Ont. / Forest Heights C.I.).

Becca Ryan (Westland, Mich. / Dearborn Divine Child) led off the third with a walk, advanced to second when Brittany Omelanchuk (Brooklin, Ont. / Wilson S.S.) reached on an error, and scored on an RBI single to center by Sam Cain (Taylor, Mich. / Kennedy).  LeClair plated Omelanchuk with a two-out infield single.

WSU senior pitcher Nicole Abel (Kitchener, Ont. / St. Mary's) earned her fifth win of the season by tossing a three-hit shutout.  She struck out a career-high 12 and walked two, facing just 26 batters in the contest.

Abel started the contest by retiring the first seven Detroit batters before a one-out single in the third.  Back-to-back one-out singles in the third followed by a fielder's choice loaded the bases, but a force out at home and a strikeout ended the frame.

Detroit threatened in the sixth with a pair of walks to start the inning, but a line drive double play was the start of six consecutive outs to end the contest.

LeClair went 3-for-4 with two RBI to lead an 11-hit attack by the Warriors.  Jaci Banton (Richmond Hill, Ont. / Cardinal Carter) went 2-for-3 as did Cain.  Seven different WSU batters had hits in the contest.

Wayne State will close out the regular-season with eight consecutive GLIAC contests starting with a home doubleheader on Saturday vs. Grand Valley.  First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
