HILLSDALE, Mich. - The Wayne State University baseball team (26-14, 20-5 GLIAC) scored in all seven innings, including an eight-run third frame, on its way to a
23-8 victory at Hillsdale College (10-28, 7-20 GLIAC) in the opener of Saturday's twinbill.
Wayne State exceeded its overall win total from a year ago and posted its second 20-plus run performance of the season.
The first four Warriors in the batting order went a combined 11-for-18 with four home runs, five walks, 11 RBI and 15 runs scored.
Caleb Dalman (Hudsonville, Mich.) scored five times and drove in three runs as part of a 4-for-6 game.
Andrew Ciennik (Waterford, Mich.) and
Ryan LaPensee (LaSalle, Ont./St. Thomas of Villanova) had two hits apiece, and
Paul LaMantia (Tecumseh, Ont./St. Anne's) reached base six times, scored four runs and drove in four.
Two of the four homers came off the bat of LaMantia, who has four in the last three games and 10 on the season. Dalman and LaPensee also went deep for WSU.
Other key contributors included
Michael Wiseman (White Lake, Mich./Lakeland), who had three RBI, and
Kyle Vesey (Brighton, Mich.), who went 3-for-6 and drove in a pair of runs.
Alex Trojan (Fenton, Mich./Hartland) had a three-hit game and scored three times.
The Chargers managed to score in five innings, but could not equal the offensive onslaught put on by the Warriors, who scored twice in the first, eight times in the third, three times in the fourth and sixth, and five times in the seventh.
Brett Shankin (Washington, Mich./Romeo) improved to 5-2 on the year with a four-inning start, striking out five.
Billy Hurley (Mississauga, Ont./St. Aloysius Gonzaga) worked the next two innings, and
David White (Taylor, Mich./Kennedy) broke the school record with his 50th career relief appearance, tossing a scoreless seventh frame.
NOTES
Wayne State had not recorded 20-plus run outputs twice in a season since 1999 … the last time the Warriors scored over 20 runs against the Chargers was in a 22-9 win on May 11, 2001 … Dalman set game-highs in hits, runs and RBI for his career … LaMantia is two home runs shy of the single-season school record (12) set by Jason Copeland in 1998 … White surpassed Jon Venuto (1999-2002) and Ryan Woodard (2000-03) at the top of the WSU career relief appearances list.
