Warriors Win Sixth Straight With 16-14 Triumph Over Northwood

Wayne State sweeps four-game weekend series

DETROIT - The Wayne State baseball team's offensive onslaught continued in the weekend series finale, as the Warriors (16-11, 10-3 GLIAC) defeated Northwood (12-15, 5-10 GLIAC), 16-14, in a seven-inning game to close out Saturday's twinbill.

Six Warriors had at least two hits in the win, Wayne State's sixth in a row and ninth in the last 10 games.

Ryan LaPensee (LaSalle, Ont./St. Thomas of Villanova) finished a single short of the cycle, driving in five runs and scoring three times. He is hitting .654 (17-26) with 10 RBI and 10 runs scored during his current six-game hitting streak, during which he has raised his season batting average 81 points to .410.

Caleb Dalman (Hudsonville, Mich.) had three hits, and Alex Trojan (Fenton, Mich./Hartland) was one of four Warriors with two. Both drove in a pair of runs, adding to WSU's total of 56 for the four-game series.

A slugfest ensued from the opening pitch, as the teams combined to score 24 runs over the first four innings. The teams exchanged four-run outputs in the second, but Wayne State pulled away with a seven-run third inning and tacked on three more in the fourth.

Northwood battled back to within two after scoring six times in the sixth, but David White (Taylor, Mich./Kennedy) was able to close it out with a scoreless seventh, inducing a key double play to help preserve the weekend sweep.

Matt Rustulka (Windsor, Ont./Riverside) picked up his first win as a Warrior, working an effective three relief innings and allowing just one earned run on three hits, walking none and striking out four.

Trojan's two-run double in the first erased a 1-0 deficit, and LaPensee's three-run shot to right in the second made it a 6-5 game.

Northwood would regain the lead in the third with three runs, but WSU pulled ahead for good in the bottom half of the frame, capitalizing on three errors and collecting four additional hits.

LaPensee and Paul LaMantia (Tecumseh, Ont./St. Anne's) each had an RBI in the Warriors' three-run fourth inning.

Despite the loss, the Timberwolves out-hit the Warriors 17-16 in the game. Leading Northwood offensively was Matt Czajkowski who reached base four times, finishing 2-for-3 with a home run, two walks, two RBI and three runs scored.

Wayne State will head to Ypsilanti on Tuesday to take on Eastern Michigan before opening a seven-game homestand with a doubleheader Wednesday against Hillsdale.
