YPSILANTI, Mich- The Wayne State University baseball team (16-12, 10-3 GLIAC) had its six-game winning streak snapped by Eastern Michigan on Tuesday night when the Eagles defeated the Warriors 6-4.
Trailing 6-1 heading into the seventh inning, WSU was able to trim its deficit to just two runs before EMU was able to end the comeback bid.
Earlier this season, Wayne State lost to Eastern Michigan, who is led by former Wayne State head coach Jay Alexander, 10-8 in a game that went 10 innings.
Kyle Vesey led Wayne State with two hits, one run scored, one RBI and a stolen base. Josh Schafer also had a good day at the plate, going 3-for-5 and driving in a run. With two stolen bases, Ryan LaPensee made life difficult for Eastern Michigan on the base baths.
Also contributing for WSU was Cameron Walker, Alex Trojan and Brad Guenther. All three scored runs.
Alex Pierse started for the Warriors and lasted three innings, allowing two runs on one hit and four walks. Pierse record falls to 1-1 with the loss. The relief duo of Josh Wedesky and Billy Hurley gave a strong performance for Wayne State, combining to throw 4.2 scoreless innings and give up just two hits.
EMU would strike first in the first inning before Wayne State responded in the bottom of the second thanks to a single to left field by John Skaggs that scored Trojan who had reached base on an error. After two innings of play the game was tied at 1-1.
Eastern Michigan would proceed to score five runs over the next two innings to grab a 6-1 lead. The Eagles scored one run off of Pierse in the third and four against Justin Sylvester to start the fourth.
However, the Warriors would mount a late comeback. After scoreless fifth and sixth innings, Vesey drew a leadoff walk with Walker then being hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second with no outs. A passed ball advanced the two to second and third before a sacrifice fly by Andrew Ciennik brought home Vesey and moved Walker up to third. Schafer was then able to score Walker thanks to a successful bunt attempt. When everything was said and done, the Warriors were two runs closer at 6-3.
In the eighth inning, WSU scored its final run of the night when Vesey singled to the shortstop to let Guenther cross the plate.
Tim Combs came on in the ninth inning to pick up the save for Eastern Michigan with a 1-2-3 inning. Neil Butara picked up the win for EMU after four strong innings.
Wayne State will return to GLIAC play on Wednesday for a double header against Hillsdale College. The first pitch is slated for 1:00 p.m.
