Warriors Score Early And Often To Defeat Hillsdale 17-5

DETROIT – A steady rain failed to cool off the bats of the Wayne State University baseball team on Wednesday as WSU (17-12,11-3 GLIAC) totaled 16 hits on its way to a 17-5 win against Hillsdale College (7-20,4-12 GLIAC). Wayne State would score in five of its six trips to the plate

The Warriors have now won their last seven conference games and have scored 10 or more runs in four of the past six outings.

All nine starters recorded at least one hit and one run for Wayne State. Leading the offensive charge for WSU was Kyle Vesey who went 4-for-4 from the plate, scoring three runs. Two of Vesey's hits were doubles.

Paul LaMantia had a game-high four RBI off of two hits while Caleb Dalman also drove in three runs. Ryan LaPensee, who is on an eight-game hitting streak, joined in on the action with a two RBI and two run day in addition to his ninth stolen base of the season.

Andrew Ciennik was the fifth Warrior to have a multi-hit day after a 2-for-5 performance that also saw the shortstop score two runs and drive in another.

Justin Mazur improved to 5-0 on the season after throwing his fifth complete game of the year. Mazur, who leads Wayne State in both wins and strikeouts, fanned six Hillsdale batters and threw 105 pitches.

Entering the bottom of the second tied at 1-1, WSU plated four runs on five hits to bust the game open. With runners on second and third, Ciennik hit the first of what would be three consecutive RBI singles by Wayne State batters in the inning. Later in the inning, Wiseman would hit a sacrifice fly that enabled LaPensee to reach home for the stanza's fourth run.

The Warriors added three more runs in the third inning thanks in part to a two-out double down the left field line by LaMantia that drove in two.

The Chargers would mount a mini comeback by scoring two runs in the top of the fourth, but WSU put any thoughts of a comeback to rest with six-run fourth inning.

WSU loaded the bases in the bottom of the fourth before a rain delay stopped play for 35 minutes. However, Wayne State picked up right where it left off when play resumed as Dalman singled to centerfield to score two runs and open the flood gates to the huge inning.

Wayne State added three more insurance runs in the sixth before Mazur struck out two Chargers and forced another fly out to center to secure the win.

Game two of the doubleheader was called due to rain.

Wayne State will be back in action at home this weekend against Saginaw Valley State. The Warriors will meet for two games on Saturday starting at 1:00 p.m. and one game on Sunday at 12:00 p.m.
