DETROIT, Mich. – The Wayne State men's tennis team kept its perfect record in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference intact on Wednesday by defeating Findlay
8-1. In addition to their perfect conference mark, the Warriors (13-4, 5-0 GLIAC) are also 4-0 in home matches this season.
WSU was able to grab two points in doubles play despite a rare 8-4 loss by WSU's No. 1 doubles team of
Bertrand Moulin and
Britton Steele.
Oscar Gamarra and
Kevin Turnbull were 8-3 winners over Bryan Simard and Josh Smedley at No. 2 doubles while
Thomas Ducret and
Will Nolan teamed up for the second time this season in the third flight to beat Bryan Little and David Brooks 8-6. Gamarra and Turnbull now have a record of 10-5 on the season.
The Warriors were triumphant in all six singles matches by way of straight-set victories.
Just as he has done in his previous 12 matches, Moulin won at No. 1 singles 7-5, 6-3 against Kyle Collette.
Steele was able to snap his losing streak at No. 2 singles by besting Dawid Hebda 6-4, 6-3. Also snapping a losing streak in singles competition on Wednesday was Gamarra who won his No. 4 singles match 6-2, 6-2 over Simard.
From the third slot, Ducret racked up his 12th victory of the season by way of a 6-0, 6-3 win over Smedley.
Turnbull won his third consecutive singles match from the five spot 6-3, 6-4 against Little.
Jon Groszek continued his outstanding freshman campaign by beating Brooks 6-0, 6-1 from the sixth flight. Groszek has now won 10 matches and is third on the team in singles victories behind Moulin (18) and Ducret (12).
Wayne State will now travel for a crucial showdown with GLIAC at rival Ferris State on Sunday. Both schools are currently undefeated in the conference. The match is scheduled to begin play at 1:00 p.m.
