WSU Softball Advances To Midwest Regional Final With 9-0 Win

Warriors score seven times in the bottom of the first.

DETROIT -- The seventh-ranked Wayne State University softball team (49-10 overall) wasted little time in its winner's bracket contest Saturday morning against Saginaw Valley State University (28-15 overall) scoring seven times in the bottom of the first inning en route to a 9-0 victory in the five-inning contest.

The victory advanced the Warriors into Sunday's championship round.  Later in the day on Saturday at the WSU Softball Stadium, Quincy defeated Indianapolis 1-0 on a solo home run by Carla Passini in the bottom of the second.  The UI Greyhouds were the defending Midwest Regional champions.

In Saturday's third contest, SVSU scored once in the top of the seventh to tie the game at one and tallied the game-winning run in the eighth in a 2-1 elimination game victory over Quincy.

In WSU's 9-0 triumph, sophomore right fielder Alison Allen (Redford, Mich. / Farmington Hills Mercy), the 2010 GLIAC Player of the Year homered on the second pitch of the frame giving the Warriors a 1-0 lead.  Senior shortstop Jaci Banton (Richmond Hill, Ont. / Cardinal Carter) followed with a single and was safe at second on a throwing error on a bunt by Rebecca Stanley (Waterloo, Ont. / Waterloo C.I.).  A sacrifice bunt by cleanup hitter Becca Ryan (Westland, Mich. / Dearborn Divine Child) put two runners in scoring position and senior left fielder Stephanie LeClair (Kitchener, Ont. / Forest Heights C.I.) delivered a two-run double to left.  Redshirt freshman catcher Brittany Omelanchuk (Brooklin, Ont. / Wilson S.S.) followed with an RBI double to left center chasing Cardinal starting pitcher Lauren Memmer (5-5).

Steph Foreman (Cambridge, Ont. / Preston) walked on a 3-2 pitch from reliever Alexa Gehrls.  Both Foreman and Omelanchuk moved up a base on a wild pitch.  Following a strikeout, Lauren Histed (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Utica) walked on four pitches to load the bases.  Allen also walked on four pitches for her second RBI of the inning. On another wild pitch plating Foreman, and bad relay throw to the plate allowed Histed to score.

Meanwhile, WSU senior pitcher Casey Hanes (Richmond, Va. / Douglas Freeman) limited the Cardinals to five base runners -- two walks and three hit by pitches -- but was able to strand all five in recording her second no-hitter of the season.  Two of the five base runners advanced to second, but none were able to reach third.

Wayne State scored its final two runs in the bottom of the fourth as LeClair had a leadoff infield single. Omelanchuk reached on a sacrifice bunt as LeClair beat the throw to second.  Foreman advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt.  Senior Nicole Abel (Kitchener, Ont. / St. Mary's) ripped a 1-2 offering up the middle for a two-run single.

WSU went 5-for-15 with runners on base, while SVSU was 0-for-7.

Seven different Warriors had hits in the contest with LeClair leading the way with two.

Wayne State and Saginaw Valley will meet in Sunday's championship round with the Warriors needing a win in either game No. 6 or the if necessary game #7 to advance to next weekend's NCAA Midwest Super Regional.
