Warriors Wrap Up Season With 14-10 Loss At GVSU

LaPensee sets single-season hits, career doubles records

ALLENDALE, Mich. - In its final game of the 2010 regular season, the Wayne State University baseball team (29-18, 23-8 GLIAC) closed out a three-game series at Grand Valley State University (33-12, 23-9 GLIAC) with a 14-10 loss on Sunday afternoon.

A slugfest ensued for the second straight game between the Lakers and Warriors, as they collected 17 hits apiece. Six Warriors had multiple-hit performances.

Ryan LaPensee (LaSalle, Ont./St. Thomas of Villanova) doubled twice, the first of which came in the fourth inning and brought his season total to 78 hits, setting a new Wayne State single-season record. He passed former WSU shortstop Frank Jeney, who had 77 hits in 2005.

LaPensee, who extended his hitting streak to 12 games, also reached 48 doubles for his career, moving him ahead of former first baseman Jon Weisman (2004-07) as WSU's all-time leader.

Totaling three hits apiece Sunday were Andrew Ciennik (Waterford, Mich./Mott) and Kyle Vesey (Brighton, Mich.), who each scored a run as well.

Jamie Bailey (Petrolia, Ont./Lambton) had two hits and three RBI from the leadoff spot, while Paul LaMantia (Tecumseh, Ont./St. Anne's) and Michael Wiseman (White Lake, Mich./Lakeland) finished with two hits each.

LaMantia also drove in a run, his 55th RBI of the year. He is one RBI shy of the single-season record of 56, set by Mark Limback in 1982 and matched by Mike Fenech in 1998.

The Warriors scored a pair of runs in three straight innings beginning in the second, and had a three-run fifth. The Lakers, however, scored in seven of their eight turns at the plate including three multiple-run efforts in the early innings.

Josh Wedesky (Fowlerville, Mich.), one of five WSU pitchers used, took the loss (1-4) after 2.2 innings of work. GVSU starter Cory Rademacher surrendered nine runs on 15 hits over 4.1 innings.

Jared Knuth (5-2) clamped down on the Warrior offense, however, giving up only one run on two hits in 4.2 relief innings.

Bailey's two-run single gave WSU a 2-1 lead in the top of the second, but the Lakers answered with three runs in the bottom half. Wayne State tied it up in the third before GVSU's four-run output gave the home team an 8-4 lead.

As the Warriors continued to put up runs over the next two innings, the Lakers responded and maintained a lead of at least two runs. LaPensee hit a two-run double to center as part of WSU's three-run fifth inning.

Wayne State will enter the 2010 GLIAC Tournament as the No. 1 seed and will face Saginaw Valley State in the opening round Thursday at V.A. Memorial Stadium in Chillicothe, Ohio.

NOTES
LaPensee also tied Weisman's school record of 195 career games played … the Warriors are 8-8 against the Lakers over the last three years … Wayne State went 7-5 in games scheduled for nine innings this season.
