DETROIT - Sporting pink jerseys as part of its annual Dig For a Cure Night, the Wayne State University volleyball team (6-9, 5-5 GLIAC) lost in
five sets to Northwood University (7-7, 5-4 GLIAC) on Friday night at the Matthaei.
The Warriors jumped out to a 2-0 overall lead (25-22, 25-16), having never trailed in either of the first two sets. The Timberwolves stormed back, however, to take the next three (25-19, 25-23, 15-10).
Both teams hit .289 in an evenly-played fourth set which saw eight ties and four lead changes. Northwood led for the duration of the fifth and deciding set.
Kristen Bulkiewicz (LaSalle, Ont./Sandwich) finished with a career-high 21 kills and contributed nine digs, four blocks and a pair of service aces.
Candice Ottey (Ajax, Ont.) was the only other Warrior in double figures with 10 kills.
Madie Kent (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich./Grosse Pointe North) totaled nine kills and 16 digs, while
Nicole Arends (Ravenna, Mich.) collected seven kills and a team-high six blocks.
On a positive note for the Warriors, they raised over $500 for breast cancer research and prevention, and will continue their fundraising efforts throughout the month of October.
Wayne State will host Lake Superior State at the Matthaei tomorrow at 4:00 p.m. Free admission is offered to fans who show a ticket to tomorrow's Wayne State-Lake Erie football game.
