Kissimmee, Fla. -- The Wayne State University softball team (4-8 overall) dropped an
8-3 decision to the seventh-ranked Indianapolis Greyhounds (10-5-1 overall) Monday evening.
UI led 4-0 after 3 1/2 innings before the Warriors rallied with a three-run fourth to pull within a run. The Greyhounds added a run in the fifth and three more in the seventh to complete the scoring.
Winning pitcher Jennifer DeMotte (7-3) went 3-for-5 with three RBI, while Dakota Malayer had a solo home run. DeMotte scattered eight hits and allowed three runs (one earned) with three strikeouts and three walks.
Freshman
Lauren McLaughlin (Oakville, Ont. / Holy Trinity) allowed eight earned runs on 12 hits. She struck out five and walked seven.
Freshman second baseman
Nikki Fulton (Stratford, Ont. / St. Michael Catholic S.S.) led off the bottom of the fourth with a walk. Junior shortstop
Lauren Histed (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Utica) had a one-out infield single. After a strikeout, junior right fielder
Alison Allen (Redford, Mich. / Farmington Hills Mercy) had an RBI single up the middle scoring Fulton, while Histed crossed the plate following a bad relay throw after the initial play at the plate. Allen later scored on a passed ball.
Junior first baseman
Rebecca Ryan (Westland, Mich. / Dearborn Divine Child), Omelanchuk and Histed each had two hits in the contest.
