Wiseman Sets RBI Mark As WSU Wins Two At Findlay

Warriors open conference play with two road victories

BOX SCORES: GAME 1  |  GAME 2

FINDLAY, Ohio -
Senior catcher Michael Wiseman (White Lake, Mich./Lakeland) became Wayne State University's all-time leader in runs batted in as the Warriors (10-4, 2-0 GLIAC) opened conference play with two victories at the University of Findlay (2-9, 0-2 GLIAC) on Friday afternoon.

Wiseman drove in three runs in WSU's 7-3 victory in game two, and with 155 career RBI he surpassed Hall of Famer John Miele's (1996-99) previous record of 154.

Wayne State won the series opener, 2-1, in nine innings. It was the Warriors' second extra-inning one-run victory of the season.

The Warriors and Oilers will complete the series with another doubleheader Saturday starting at 1:00 p.m.

GAME ONE: WAYNE STATE 2, FINDLAY 1 (9 INN.)

With the score knotted at 1-1 in the top of the ninth inning, Wayne State had runners at first and third with two outs. While Wiseman was caught in a rundown between first and second, Brad Guenther (Ann Arbor, Mich./Saline) was able to come in and score the go-ahead run.

Billy Hurley (Mississauga, Ont./St. Aloysius Gonzaga) came on in relief of starter Tyler Loehr (Brighton, Mich.) and retired the side for his second save of the season.

Loehr allowed four hits and three walks, striking out six in eight innings to pick up his first win of the year. Two of UF's hits came in the first inning when the Oilers scored their lone run.

The Warriors tied it in the fifth as #J.J. Ciennik# (Waterford, Mich./Mott) led off with a single, went to second on a sacrifice by Kyle Vesey (Brighton, Mich.), and scored on an RBI double by Andrew Ciennik (Waterford, Mich./Mott).

Despite a nearly-identical line to that of Loehr's, UF starter Matt Weber took the loss. He went eight innings and allowed four hits and two walks with three strikeouts.

GAME TWO: WAYNE STATE 7, FINDLAY 3

Wayne State's four-run second inning provided plenty of run support for Brett Shankin (Washington, Mich./Romeo), who went the distance and fanned six to improve to 3-1 on the year.

Wiseman was one of five Warriors to finish with two hits in the victory. #C.J. Maszal# (Allen Park, Mich.) went 2-for-3 with a walk, two RBI and a run scored.

Alex Trojan (Fenton, Mich./Hartland), Vesey and Cameron Walker (Clinton Twp., Mich./De La Salle) all had two hits as well. Walker also scored twice.

Down 1-0 in the second, Maszal drove in a pair with a one-out double. Wiseman later hit a two-run single to make it a 4-1 game.

RBI singles by Wiseman in the fourth - which gave him the WSU career RBI record - and Walker in the fifth put the Warriors ahead, 6-1.

Findlay cut its deficit to 6-3 in the sixth, scoring on a base hit by Tommy Roush and a WSU error. Shankin prevented further damage by striking out pinch hitters Jon Shollenberger and Robert Marsh to end the inning.

Trojan scored on a passed ball in the seventh to provide an additional insurance run for the Warriors, who have won nine of the last 11 meetings with the Oilers.

NOTES
With four hits in the doubleheader, Wiseman became the fifth player in Wayne State history to reach 200 hits … he has an eight-game hitting streak, tied for the longest by a Warrior this season … Maszal, who also drew a walk in the first game, has reached base safely in all 14 games … Shankin's complete game was the ninth of his career.
