FINDLAY, Ohio - The Wayne State University baseball team (12-4, 4-0 GLIAC), off to its best 16-game start since 1987, won both games of Saturday's doubleheader at the University of Findlay (2-11-1, 0-4 GLIAC) to sweep the four-game weekend series.
The Warriors triumphed, 12-1, in the first game Saturday and blanked the Oilers, 4-0, in the series finale. Findlay managed just four hits in the doubleheader thanks to solid starting pitching from
Alex Pierse (Clinton Twp., Mich./De La Salle) and
Josh Wedesky (Fowlerville, Mich.), who notched his second career shutout .
Wayne State will travel to Hillsdale for a doubleheader Wednesday before playing at home for the first time this season next Saturday and Sunday against Tiffin.
GAME THREE: WAYNE STATE 12, FINDLAY 1
The Warriors put an exclamation point on their third victory of the weekend with a seven-run seventh inning. Wayne State totaled 17 hits in the game, and Pierse pitched six strong innings to pick up his second win of the year.
The top three in the WSU batting order produced the majority of the offense. #C.J. Maszal# (Allen Park, Mich.) went 2-for-4 with a walk, two RBI and two runs scored.
Brad Guenther (Ann Arbor, Mich./Saline) finished 2-for-3 with two walks, three runs and two RBI.
Michael Wiseman (White Lake, Mich./Lakeland) collected four hits and three RBI.
Kyle Vesey (Brighton, Mich.) and
Caleb Dalman (Hudsonville, Mich.) also enjoyed three-hit performances, while
Alex Trojan (Fenton, Mich./Hartland) had two hits. All three Warriors drove in one run.
Findlay was limited to just two hits in the game. A two-out single by Dustin Zielaskiewicz was the only hit allowed by Pierse, who also walked four but struck out six.
Guenther, who scored on a passed ball in the top of the first, drove in Maszal with a base hit in the third. Wiseman subsequently brought Guenther in with a double, giving the Warriors a 3-0 lead.
Wayne State tacked on a run in the fourth on an RBI double by Dalman, and another in the sixth on an RBI single by Maszal.
The Warriors sent 13 men to the plate in the seven-run seventh, highlighted by a two-run double by Wiseman. Findlay scored an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh stemming from a WSU error.
GAME FOUR: WAYNE STATE 4, FINDLAY 0
Wedesky tossed a two-hit shutout and struck out four to improve to 4-0 on the season. Both hits came in the fifth inning, as the Oilers had runners at first and third - their only baserunners in the game - before Wedesky closed out the inning.
Wayne State took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first as Vesey drove in a pair with a base hit. The Warriors doubled their lead in the sixth as Dalman had an RBI single and
Phil Swanson (Rochester Hills, Mich./Stoney Creek), who also had a base hit in the inning, scored on an error.
Maszal went 1-for-2 with two walks and a run scored. He has reached base safely in all 16 games this season.
While the Warriors had just five hits in the game, they also drew seven walks and benefitted from two Findlay errors.

Wayne State has a team ERA of 2.38 … Wedesky is 4-0 with a 1.27 ERA and a team-best 21 strikeouts this season … Maszal is hitting .472 with an .811 slugging percentage and a .569 on-base percentage … Wiseman, who set the WSU career RBI record Friday, finished the series 8-for-16 with six RBI and three stolen bases … WSU has won 11 of the last 13 meetings with Findlay.
