Detroit, Mich. - The Wayne State University women's tennis team (14-7) recorded its third straight victory over a Division I opponent following an
8-1 win over Oakland University (3-6) at PeachTree Tennis Club on Saturday afternoon.
The Warriors, who have now beaten four Division I teams this season, took two of three doubles matches from the Golden Grizzlies before sweeping singles play.
Sharon Gill (Windsor, Ont. / Academie Ste. Cecile) and
Kristina Goranskaya (Thornhill, Ontario / Northview Heights Secondary School) defeated Caitlin Young and Jackie Dinicu in No. 1 doubles, 8-6. Gill went on to best Young in No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-0, while Goranskaya took down Dinicu, 6-2, 6-2, in the No. 2 spot.
Milena Vuksanovic (Pancevo, Serbia / Uros Predic Secondary School) and
McCall Monte (Grosse Pointe Park, Mich. / Grosse Pointe South) handed Karen Karoub and Demi Georgakopoulos an 8-4 setback in No. 2 doubles. Ahead 7-5, 4-1 in No. 3 singles, Vukasanovic won after Karoub was forced to retire. Monte beat Grace Keating, 6-3, 6-3, in No. 4 singles.
As
Debora Correa (Belo Horizonte, Brazil / Colegio Padre Eustaquio) scored a thrilling three-set victory over Georgakopoulos in No. 5 singles, 6-2, 4-6, 12-10,
Tanya Joseph (Northville, Mich. / Northville) came back from being a set down to defeat Amanda Pettey in No. 6 singles, 2-6, 6-0, 10-6.
Caroline Gosman (Windsor, Ont. / Kennedy C.I.) and
Jessica Kruczek (Detroit, Mich. / Lakeview) paired in No. 3 doubles and fell 8-1 to Keating and Pettey.
The Warriors close their spring schedule by hosting Valparaiso University at 10:30 a.m. on April 10.
