HILLSDALE, Mich. -
The Wayne State University baseball team (13-5, 5-1 GLIAC) split a doubleheader at Hillsdale College (7-13, 3-3 GLIAC) on Wednesday afternoon. The Chargers won the opener, 2-1, and the Warriors took game two, 9-2.

While the Warriors lost at Hillsdale for the first time since 2007, they recovered to defeat the Chargers for the 14th time in the last 16 meetings. WSU and Hillsdale will complete the home-and-home series April 20 in Detroit.

Wayne State will host Tiffin University this Saturday and Sunday for its home opening weekend.

GAME ONE: HILLSDALE 2, WAYNE STATE 1

For the sixth time this season, Wayne State played a one-run game where the winning side scored three runs or less. The Warriors are 3-3 in those contests.

Wayne State managed just three hits off Hillsdale starter Matthew Reck (1-0), who walked one and struck out three in six innings. Dan Pochmara fanned two in the seventh and picked up his first save of the year.

Matt Rustulka (Windsor, Ont./Riverside) pitched effectively as well, particularly as the game went on. He allowed both Hillsdale runs (one earned) in the first inning, as the Chargers accumulated five of their seven hits in the first two frames.

RBI groundouts by Jeff Scarpelli and Brent Opland produced Hillsdale's 2-0 lead. Rustulka (1-2) worked out of a one-out bases loaded jam in the second with a pair of strikeouts, and allowed just two hits and two walks the rest of the way.

Brad Guenther (Ann Arbor, Mich./Saline) drew a one-out walk in the sixth and later came in on a sacrifice fly by Alex Trojan (Fenton, Mich./Hartland) to account for WSU's only run.

GAME TWO: WAYNE STATE 9, HILLSDALE 2

The Warriors scored seven runs in the top of the seventh to snap a 2-2 tie. Caleb Dalman (Hudsonville, Mich.), Cameron Walker (Clinton Twp., Mich./De La Salle) and Andrew Ciennik (Waterford, Mich./Mott) each hit two-run double in the inning which was prolonged by a costly Hillsdale error.

Billy Hurley (Mississauga, Ont./St. Aloysius Gonzaga) earned his first win of the year, tossing three scoreless innings without allowing a hit in relief of starter Kirk Stambaugh (Sylvania, Ohio/Southview). Hurley has not surrendered a run in five appearances (13 innings) this season.

Stambaugh, making his first collegiate start, gave up two unearned runs on three hits, walking two and striking out five.

Wayne State took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third on a two-run homer by Guenther. The Chargers capitalized on a couple of WSU miscues in the bottom of the inning to tie it.

After the Warriors took the lead in the top of the seventh, Hurley struck out the side in the bottom half to secure the split.

Dalman reached base three times in the game and scored two runs. He was hit by a pitch twice, bringing his career total to 30 which ties the school record set by Aaron Lawson (1998-2001).
