DETROIT -- The Wayne State University softball squad (19-15 overall, 7-5 GLIAC) rebounded from a pair of losses on Saturday to GLIAC leader Tiffin University (22-9 overall, 13-3 GLIAC) for two one-run victories (
4-3 and
1-0) on Sunday afternoon at the WSU Softball Stadium.
Sunday's opener was a low-scoring affair but not without scoring chances.
The visiting Dragons struck in the top of the first on a hit by pitch, a single, a fielder's choice and an RBI single by Mindy Meredith.
After stranding three runners on base in the first two innings, the Warriors tied the contest in the bottom of the third. Junior right fielder
Alison Allen (Redford, Mich. / Farmington Hills Mercy) singled through the left side on an 0-2 offering. A sacrifice bunt by junior third baseman
Rebecca Stanley (Waterloo, Ont. / Waterloo C.I.) advanced Allen to second. After sophomore catcher
Brittany Omelanchuk (Brooklin, Ont. / Wilson S.S.) was intentionally walked, sophomore center fielder
Steph Foreman (Cambridge, Ont. / Preston) delivered an RBI single up the middle on the first pitch plating Allen.
Tiffin had the first two batters in the fourth reach but were not able to tally the go-ahead run.
WSU had the bases loaded in the bottom of the fourth, but a double play ended that threat.
TU stranded two in the sixth, and Allen tripled with one out in the seventh but the Warriors were unable to score the winning run.
The Dragons tallied two runs in the top of the eighth. Meagan Baird worked a walk on the ninth pitch of the at bat. After back-to-back sacrifice bunts and an intentional walk, pinch-hitter Caitlin Houk had a two-out RBI single and Amanda Temple followed with an RBI single.
In the bottom of the eighth, Omelanchuk fouled off a 3-2 pitch then laced a double to right center. Foreman drew a four pitch walk with Omelanchuk moving to third as ball four was also a wild pitch. Freshman second baseman
Nikki Fulton (Stratford, Ont. / St. Michael Catholic S.S.) reached on throwing error on her sacrifice bunt to load the bases. On a 1-1 pitch, junior shortstop
Lauren Histed (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Utica) had a two-run single to right center to tie the game at three. Freshman left fielder
Logan White (Brantford, Ont. / Johnson C.V.I.) greeted relief pitcher Amber Young with a bunt single. With the bases loaded and no outs, sophomore designated player
Makelle Barski (Trenton, Mich.) hit a 2-1 pitch into left center plating Fulton with the winning run.
Freshman
Lauren McLaughlin (Oakville, Ont. / Holy Trinity) went the distance to improve to 11-5. She struck out two and walked three while limiting Tiffin to three earned runs on 12 hits.
Meredith, the second of three Dragon hurlers, suffered the setback. She allowed three runs (two earned) on three hits in 3 2/3 innings.
Allen and Histed each had three hits, while Barski added two.
The teams combined for just six hits in the nightcap with the Warriors prevailing 1-0 behind a two-hit shutout for junior pitcher
Sam Cain (Taylor, Mich. / Kennedy). Cain held Tiffin to just 1-for-9 with runners on base.
The lone run came in the top of the fifth as Allen, WSU's all-time leader in career home runs, hit a laser over the left field fence with one out.
Cain improves to 8-10, while Young falls to 5-3. Cain had one strikeout and two walks, while facing 26 batters. Young recorded three strikeouts and four walks.
Wayne State will conclude its six-game homestand with a make-up doubleheader on Wednesday at 4 p.m. against Northwood.
