Softball Splits At Hillsdale

Warriors win 12-6, fall 4-3

Hillsdale, Mich. -- The Wayne State University softball team (20-16-1 overall, 8-6-1 GLIAC) split a conference conference doubleheader at Hillsdale College (10-22 overall, 6-11 GLIAC) Friday afternoon. The Warriors won the opener 12-6, but fell 4-3 in the nightcap.

In game one, WSU scored 10 consecutive runs after falling behind 3-0 in the first inning. After the host Chargers made it a 10-6 contest with a three-run fifth, the Warriors scored the final two runs in the top of the sixth.

Mary Depner had a three-run double in the first inning giving Hillsdale the early advantage.

Steph Foreman led off the second with a walk and was sacrifice to second by Nikki Fulton. Lauren Histed followed with an RBI double to center. Histed moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a single up the middle by Logan White. WSU took a 4-3 lead on a two-run home run to right center by Alison Allen.

Wayne State tallied two runs in the third on a leadoff home run by Brittany Omelanchuk. After an out, Fulton walked and moved to second on Histed's single. White's bunt base hit loaded the bases. Allen's single plated Fulton with WSU's sixth run.

Rebecca Stanley led off the fourth with a single and Rebecca Ryan and Omelanchuk followed with singles to load the bases. After back-to-back outs, Histed laced a three-run double to left increasing Wayne State's advantage to 9-3.

Makelle Barski singled with one out in the fifth. Allen and Stanley then walked to load the bases. Ryan's ground out scored Barski with WSU's 10th run.

A two-run triple by Jennifer Berlet highlighted a three-run fifth for Hillsdale.

The Warriors answered with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth. Foreman singled and Fulton walked with Histed reaching on an error to load the bases. Following a fielder's choice, Fulton scored on a wild pitch, and two batters later, Histed also scored on a wild pitch.

Sam Cain (9-10) went the distance in the circle for WSU.  She allowed six earned runs on eight hits with five strikeouts and five walks.

Kellie Hirst (2-7) started for Hillsdale and surrendered five earned runs on four hits in two innings of work.  Brittany Hulett tossed the final five innings and gave up seven runs (five earned) on 10 hits.

Every WSU starter had at least one hit except Fulton, who walked twice.  Histed had three hits and four RBI while Allen contributed two hits, three RBI and reached base all five times (two hits and three walks).

In the nightcap, HC grabbed a 1-0 lead in the third as a pair of Warrior errors were sandwiched around a two-out Charger double.

WSU responded with three runs in the fifth.  Foreman had a leadoff double and moved to third on Fulton's single.  After a ground out, Foreman scored on White's single to left.  Fulton crossed home plate on Barski's fielder's choice, while White scored as Allen reached on an error.

In the top of the sixth, a leadoff single was followed by back-to-back bunt hits to load the bases.  With one out, winning pitcher Laura Homan (6-9) tripled to right center putting the Chargers in front 4-3.

Homan then retired six of WSU's final eight batters to preserve the one-run win.  WSU was just 2-for-11 with runners on base in the game after going 9-for-26 in game one with runners on base.

Homan allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits with five strikeouts and two walks.

Lauren McLaughlin (11-7) went the distance in the circle for the Warriors.  She allowed four runs (three earned) on nine hits with six strikeouts and two walks.

White was the lone Warrior with a multiple-hit game in the nightcap.

Wayne State is scheduled to play a league twinbill at Grand Valley on Saturday, weather permitting.
