Baseball Totals 26 Runs In Two Wins Over ODU

Vesey, Guenther homer in Saturday doubleheader

DETROIT -
The Wayne State University baseball team (20-10, 12-6 GLIAC) opened its six-game homestand with two victories over Ohio Dominican University (12-17, 9-9 GLIAC) on Saturday afternoon.

Wayne State scored 13 runs in the first inning on its way to a 15-4 win in the series opener. The Warriors followed that with an 11-5 victory in game two.

Sunday's doubleheader between WSU and ODU is scheduled to start at noon.


GAME ONE: WAYNE STATE 15, OHIO DOMINICAN 4

The Warriors sent 16 hitters to the plate in their 13-run first inning, racking up six hits and five walks while also benefitting from an ODU error. Kyle Vesey (Brighton, Mich.) drove in four runs in the inning, with an RBI single in his first at-bat and a three-run homer to right center later in the frame. Vesey finished the game 3-for-4 with two runs scored.

Cameron Walker (Clinton Twp., Mich./De La Salle), who had two hits and three RBI in Saturday's opener, doubled in two runs. Andrew Ciennik (Waterford, Mich./Mott) smacked a two-run triple and Brad Guenther (Ann Arbor, Mich./Saline) drove in two runs with a base hit.

Wayne State added runs on sacrifice flies by Caleb Dalman (Hudsonville, Mich.) in the second and Walker in the fourth.

The Panthers scored on a pair of two-run homers, one by John Bowron in the second and another by J.T. Feldkamp in the seventh.

Alex Pierse (Clinton Twp., Mich./De La Salle) improved to 4-1 on the season, allowing two runs on six hits in five innings. ODU's Nick Venditti made a 5.2 inning relief appearance for Sean Blackburn (4-2), who was chased from the game in the first inning.


GAME TWO: WAYNE STATE 11, OHIO DOMINICAN 5

Wayne State jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the second inning and held on to sweep the doubleheader. Guenther went 4-for-4 with four RBI and two runs scored to lead the Warrior offense.

Alex Trojan (Fenton, Mich./Hartland), Ryan Buter (North Muskegon, Mich.) and Walker all enjoyed two-hit games.

Among the highlights in the second inning were a two-run double by Dalman, who scored three runs in the game, and a three-run homer by Guenther.

Guenther drove in another run with a double in the fourth. A sacrifice fly by Ciennik gave the Warriors an 8-2 lead.

Feldkamp's second home run of the afternoon, a two-run shot to right center, contributed to a three-run fifth inning for the Panthers, who closed the gap to 8-5 before WSU answered with a three-run sixth inning.

Michael Wiseman (White Lake, Mich./Lakeland) hit an RBI double and later scored with Guenther on a base hit by Trojan.

Josh Wedesky (Fowlerville, Mich.) remained unbeaten on the year at 7-0, striking out seven over five innings. Kirk Stambaugh (Sylvania, Ohio/Southview) and Billy Hurley (Mississauga, Ont./St. Aloysius Gonzaga) preserved the victory.


NOTES
With his base hit in the fifth inning of game one, Wiseman tied Hall of Famer Frank Jeney (2002-05) for second all-time at WSU in career hits (215) … he passed Jeney with his double in the sixth inning of game two … Ohio Dominican, an newcomer to the GLIAC this season, and Wayne State had not met since 2002 … Vesey's four RBI in game one and Guenther's four RBI in game two set career-highs for both players … Wedesky leads the WSU staff with 36 strikeouts … Ciennik took sole possession of third place all-time at WSU with 12 sacrifice flies, passing Bobby Marten (2002-05).
