Softball Splits At Grand Valley

Warriors rebound for 4-1 victory after 11-2 setback.

Allendale, Mich.
-- The Wayne State University softball team (21-18-1 overall, 9-8-1 GLIAC) split a road conference doubleheader for the second straight day with a 4-1 victory in the nightcap at Grand Valley (30-7 overall, 16-4 GLIAC), following an 11-2 setback in the opener.

In Saturday's first game, the Warriors led 2-0 after an inning-and-a-half, but the host Lakers scored the final 11 runs for the five inning win.

Alison Allen (Redford, Mich. / Farmington Hills Mercy) led off the game with a double, went to third on a sacrifice bunt by Rebecca Stanley (Waterloo, Ont. / Waterloo C.I.), and scored on an RBI groundout by Rebecca Ryan (Westland, Mich. / Dearborn Divine Child).

Nikki Fulton (Stratford, Ont. / St. Michael Catholic S.S.) walked leading off the second, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and moved to third base when Lauren Histed (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Utica) reached on a GVSU throwing error.  After an infield single by Logan White (Brantford, Ont. / Johnson C.V.I.) loaded the bases, Makelle Barski (Trenton, Mich.) plated Fulton with an RBI single to center field.

The Lakers scored once in the second and five times in both the third and fourth innings to complete the scoring.  GVSU had eight extra-base hits in the contest including three home runs.

Sam Cain (Taylor, Mich. / Kennedy) went the distance for WSU allowing all 11 runs (10 earned) on 11 hits in four innings.  She struck out one and walked two.

Andrea Nicholson earned the win for Grand Valley.  She allowed two earned runs on seven hits in her five innings with four strikeouts and one walk.

Seven different Warriors had hits in the contest.

In the nightcap, WSU scored three times in the bottom of the first with a revamped batting order.

White had a leadoff single, and following a groundout, Allen smacked her eighth home run of the campaign.    Brittany Omelanchuk (Brooklin, Ont. / Wilson S.S.) followed with her sixth round-tripper of the season.

Wayne State increased its lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the third as Histed had a leadoff single.  She advanced to second and then third on back-to-back groundouts.  Fulton's two-out double to right center scored Histed.

GVSU tallied its first run in the top of the sixth, but left a runner stranded at second.  In the seventh, back-to-back lead off doubles put runners at second and third.  WSU starter Lauren McLaughlin (Oakville, Ont. / Holy Trinity) then retired three straight Laker batters on a groundout to the mound, a groundout to second and ended the game with a strikeout.

McLaughlin limited Grand Valley to one earned run on nine hits.  She struck out two and did not walk a batter in earning her 12th win of the season.

Katie Martin (8-4) started for GVSU and was replaced after allowing four earned runs on five hits in two-plus innings of work.  Hannah Santora blanked the Warriors in her four innings of work.

The Lakers stranded 12 runners in out-hitting WSU 9-8.

Fulton was the lone Warrior with a multiple-hit game.

Wayne State concludes its six-game road trip this weekend with a twinbill at Ferris State on Sunday.
