BOX SCORES: GAME 3 | GAME 4
DETROIT - Scoring double-digit run totals in four straight games for the first time in nearly 30 years, the Wayne State University baseball team (22-10, 14-6 GLIAC) won both games Sunday, 15-6 and 15-0, to sweep the weekend series against Ohio Dominican University (12-19, 9-11 GLIAC).
Michael Wiseman (White Lake, Mich./Lakeland) homered in each game, while
Ryan Buter (North Muskegon, Mich.) went deep twice in Sunday's opener. The Warriors hit six home runs in the series, one more than they had hit in the previous 28 games this season.
The series was capped off by an outstanding pitching performance by
Brett Shankin (Washington, Mich./Romeo), who threw a one-hitter and struck out five.
The Warriors scored 56 runs on the weekend, as most of their big scoring bursts came early in games. WSU totaled 36 of its 56 runs in the first and second innings.
Wayne State will face Hillsdale in a doubleheader Wednesday at 2:00 in Detroit.
GAME THREE: WAYNE STATE 15, OHIO DOMINICAN 6
The first seven batters in the Wayne State order had at least two hits in this game, led by
Brad Guenther (Ann Arbor, Mich./Saline),
Alex Trojan (Fenton, Mich./Hartland) and Buter who had three hits apiece. Buter and Wiseman drove in nine runs combined, while
Andrew Ciennik (Waterford, Mich./Mott) scored three times.
As they had in game two Saturday, the Warriors scored six runs in the first inning, highlighted by a two-run single by
Kyle Vesey (Brighton, Mich.) and a two-run homer to right by Buter.
After a three-run second inning for the Panthers in which Anthony Raschilla hit a two-run homer, the Warriors doubled their scoring total with a six-run second inning, as Buter smacked a three-run shot to right center.
Wiseman's two-run blast to right in the third inning put the Warriors ahead, 14-4, which is how it would stand until the sixth inning when each team scored once.
Tyler Loehr (Brighton, Mich.) improved to 2-4 on the year, striking out a season-high eight over 5.0 innings.
Justin Sylvester (Macomb, Mich./Dakota) allowed one earned run in two relief innings.
ODU starter Alex Borgan (2-4) was responsible for 14 runs on 11 hits in two innings.
GAME FOUR: WAYNE STATE 15, OHIO DOMINICAN 0
Shankin (5-1) took a no-hitter into the sixth inning when Andrew Powelson led off the inning with a bouncer up the middle which deflected off Shankin's glove and continued on just out of the reach of Ciennik at second base.
The senior right-hander walked only two and struck out five. He induced 13 ground-ball outs – on a day when winds were gusting over 30 miles per hour out to right field – including two double plays.
Meanwhile, eight WSU starters had at least one hit, with the lone exception being
Caleb Dalman (Hudsonville, Mich.) who walked twice and was hit by a pitch for the 35th time in his career, extending his school record.
Buter and
Cameron Walker (Clinton Twp., Mich./De La Salle), who each had three RBI, were among five Warriors to finish with two hits in the game, along with Ciennik, Wiseman and Trojan.
The Warriors enjoyed yet another big first inning, jumping out to a 4-0 lead. ODU starter Kyle Price held the Warriors to just three hits over the first four frames until they chased Price from the game with a five-run fifth inning which included Buter's two-run double.
Wayne State poured on six more runs in the sixth inning, as Wiseman hit his second homer of the day to drive in a pair.
Price (2-1) allowed eight runs on six hits and four walks in 4.1 innings before Kyle Gore came in and surrendered seven more runs in the final 1.2 innings.
