Softball Earns Split At Ohio Dominican

Warriors rebound from 4-2 loss for 9-5 victory.


Columbus, Ohio -- The Wayne State University softball team (15-13 overall, 3-3 GLIAC) rebounded from a 4-2 setback in Saturday's first game at Ohio Dominican University (7-19 overall, 2-6 GLIAC) with a 9-5 triumph in the nightcap.

The Warriors scored first in the opener as Alison Allen and Rebecca Ryan both walked and after a fielder's choice, Steph Foreman delivered a two-out RBI single to right plating Allen.

The Panthers tied the contest in the second on a single, a sacrifice bunt and a WSU throwing error.

ODU went ahead in the fifth on a leadoff home run.

Foreman was again a key component to Wayne State scoring in the sixth as she had a leadoff single.  A sacrifice bunt by Makelle Barski advanced Foreman to second where she scored from on a double down the left field line by Nikki Fulton.

Three singles produced two Panthers runs in the sixth putting the hosts up 4-2.

Allen singled leading off the seventh, but three consecutive outs ended the contest.

Sam Cain took the loss after allowing four runs (three earned) on eight hits in six innings.  She struck out one and walked one.

Maria Staton (2-6) earned the win in relief for ODU.  She limited the Warriors to one run on four hits in 4 2/3 innings with three strikeouts and no walks.  WSU scored once in 2 1/3 innings off Panther starter Shana Etter, who walked five batters.

Allen and Foreman combined for four of WSU's six hits.

Ohio Dominican scored twice in the top of the first in game two on three hits, a double steal and a passed ball.

Wayne State responded with three runs in the bottom of the frame on singles by Allen and Ryan, and a two-out three-run home run by Foreman.

Foreman started the three-run frame in the fourth with a single.  After a sacrifice bunt, Fulton singled in Foreman with Fulton advancing to third on an error.  A sacrifice fly by Logan White plated Fulton.  Lauren Histed followed with a single and scored on a two-out double by Allen.

The Panthers pulled within two at 6-4 with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth on one hit and two Warrior errors.

WSU answered with a run in the bottom of the inning as Brittany Omelanchuk had a one-out single, went to second on a wild pitch, and scored on a two-out single by Barski.

In the bottom of the sixth, Histed and Allen had back-to-back one-out singles with both runners scoring on a single by Rebecca Stanley along with an ODU error.

Ohio Dominican completed the scoring with a run in the top of the seventh.

Lauren McLaughlin went the distance in the circle for WSU to earn the victory.  She allowed five rusn (two earned) on 10 hits with five strikeouts and one walk.

Caitlin Chaney started for ODU and allowed six earned runs on eight hits in 3 2/3 innings.  Staton surrendered three runs (one earned) on seven hits over the final 2 1/3 innings.

Allen led WSU's 15-hit attack with three hits.  Five other Warriors -- Stanley, Omelanchuk, Foreman, Fulton and Histed -- each had two hits in the contest.

The teams will conclude the four-game weekend set with a twinbill on Sunday at Panther Field.
