Warriors Rally Twice To Sweep Chargers

Wiseman hits 23rd career home run in opener

BOX SCORES:  GAME 1  |  GAME 2

DETROIT -
The Wayne State University baseball team (24-10, 16-6 GLIAC) came from behind in each game of Wednesday's doubleheader against Hillsdale College (13-23, 9-13 GLIAC), winning the first game, 10-9, and the second, 7-4.

The fifth inning was the turning point in each contest, as a six-run rally erased a 9-4 deficit in game one, while the Warriors scored four times in the fifth inning of game two to pull ahead, 6-3.

Andrew Ciennik (Waterford, Mich./Mott) went 4-for-7 with three RBI in the doubleheader, Brad Guenther (Ann Arbor, Mich./Saline) finished 2-for-3 with five walks and four runs scored, and Michael Wiseman (White Lake, Mich./Lakeland) hit his third home runs in as many games in Wednesday's opener.

Billy Hurley (Mississauga, Ont./St. Aloysius Gonzaga) closed out both contests to pick up two saves, his fourth and fifth of the year.

Wayne State will travel to Ashland to begin a four-game series Friday afternoon.

GAME ONE: WAYNE STATE 10, HILLSDALE 9

The Warriors answered the Chargers' six-run third inning with a six-run fifth inning in a game which saw the two pitching staffs issue a total of 16 walks.

Ciennik smacked an RBI triple to right center in the bottom of the first inning and later scored on a balk to erase Hillsdale's 2-0 lead established on a two-run homer by Chris Stephens in the top of the first.

Wayne State pulled ahead in the second on a bases-loaded walk to Guenther, but Jeff Scarpelli and Mike Blanchard each drove in a pair of runs as Hillsdale took an 8-3 lead.

Wiseman, who led off the third with a home run, sparked the WSU rally in the fifth with a leadoff double. Alex Trojan (Fenton, Mich./Hartland), Kyle Vesey (Brighton, Mich.), Ryan Buter (North Muskegon, Mich.), and Guenther each drove in a run, and Ciennik's two-run single gave the Warriors the lead.

Matt Mahalak (Wyandotte, Mich./Our Lady of Mt. Carmel), one of seven Warrior pitchers used, earned his first collegiate victory. P.J. Cooley (2-3) took the loss in relief.

GAME TWO: WAYNE STATE 7, HILLSDALE 4

Hillsdale chipped away a 2-0 deficit with a run in the fourth inning and two more in the fifth before Wayne State recaptured the lead with four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Cameron Walker (Clinton Twp., Mich./De La Salle) went 2-for-3 with two RBI in the victory, the first of the year for freshman starter Kirk Stambaugh (Sylvania, Ohio/Southview).

Guenther's second bases-loaded walk of the afternoon put WSU ahead, 2-0, in the second inning. Hillsdale cut it to 2-1 in the fourth on an RBI single by Scott Lantis.

Scarpelli's two-run single in the fifth gave the Chargers a short-lived 3-2 lead. In the bottom half, two walks and an error loaded the bases, while infield singles by Trojan and Vesey put WSU back in the lead. Walker capped off the inning with a two-run single.

Wiseman provided an additional insurance run with a sacrifice fly in the seventh. Hurley, despite allowing his first run of the season, worked the last two innings for his second save of the day.

Stambaugh allowed three runs on seven hits, walking one and striking out six. Michael Bauer (0-2) gave up seven runs (three earned) on eight hits. He walked four and fanned four in 5.1 innings.

NOTES
Matching the career totals of two WSU Hall of Famers, Wiseman tied John Miele (1996-99) for third place all-time at WSU in doubles (44) and Mark Limback (1979-82) for fourth place in home runs (23) … Wiseman also surpassed Ryan LaPensee (2007-10) for second place in extra-base hits (73) … Wayne State went 3-1 against Hillsdale this season … Wednesday's first game was the fifth straight double-digit run total for the Warriors.
