Women's Hockey Hands Out 2010-11 Awards

Wayne State University women's hockey head coach Jim Fetter and his staff announced the recipients of the 2010-11 team awards at the squad's season-end banquet, held Tuesday afternoon at the McGregor Memorial Conference Center on the WSU campus.

Junior goaltender Delayne Brian (Winnipeg, Man./Notre Dame Hounds) was voted by her teammates as Wayne State's Most Valuable Player. Brian started all 31 games, a WSU single-season record, and also set program marks for saves (978) and minutes played (1856:08). She amassed 30 or more saves in 21 games and tied the school single-season record with four shutouts. Brian led College Hockey America (21st nationally) with a .921 save percentage, ranked second in the nation in saves, and was a six-time CHA Goaltender of the Week and three-time CHA Goaltender of the Month.

Brian was also presented with a commemorative plaque recognizing her single-season saves record, which she set Feb. 19 at Niagara University.

Defenseman Cari Coen (Manhattan Beach, Calif./L.A. Selects) was presented with the Rookie of the Year award. A CHA All-Rookie Team selection, Coen finished eighth among CHA freshmen and seventh among league defensemen with 11 points. She totaled nine assists, tied for 10th-most by a freshman in a single season in program history, and posted nine of her 11 points on power plays.

An All-CHA Second Team honoree for the second straight year, junior Jill Szandzik (Warren, Mich./Little Caesars) was named Best Defensive Player. Szandzik finished second on the team with 20 points, second-most by a defenseman in school history, and tied Chelsea Burnett (2007-08) for the second-highest assists total by a blueliner in a single season (17). Szandzik ranked 19th in the nation in points per game among defensemen (0.65), tied for eighth in the conference in power-play points (12, team-high), fourth in points by a defenseman and tied for 10th overall in assists.

Top Gun honors went to sophomore forward Julie Ingratta (Markham, Ont./North American Hockey Academy), the team leader with 21 points. She finished second on the team with 11 goals and 87 shots on goal. Ingratta tied for 16th in the conference in points, tied for 12th in goals, and tied for 10th in power-play points (11).

Sophomore forward Jaclyn Stapleton (Westbank, B.C./Pursuit of Excellence) was named Most Improved Player, junior defenseman Ciara Lee (Toronto, Ont./Etobicoke Jr. Dolphins) received the Warrior Award as well as a plaque recognizing her Hockey Humanitarian Award nomination, and sophomore forward Gina Buquet (Lafayette, La./Ohio Flames) took the President's Award for having the highest grade-point average on the squad (3.82 in exercise science).

Lee and junior forward Alyssa Baldin (Mississauga, Ont./Mississauga Jr. Chiefs) were recognized with Captains Awards to honor their leadership roles on the team. In addition, sophomores Lauren Coxon (Kitchener, Ont./Waterloo KW Rangers) and Lauren Lovold (MacTier, Ont./Mississauga Jr. Chiefs) received trophies for having scored their first collegiate goals last season, and Baldin was presented a trophy for her first career hat trick.
