ASHLAND, Ohio - The Wayne State University baseball team (26-11, 18-7 GLIAC) swept Ashland University (25-14, 14-10 GLIAC) in a doubleheader Saturday afternoon,
5-4 and
8-1, to take two out of three games in the weekend series.
Wayne State took a 5-0 lead in game one and held on to win.
Josh Wedesky (Fowlerville, Mich.) improved to 8-0 on the year, and
Billy Hurley (Mississauga, Ont./St. Aloysius Gonzaga) picked up his sixth save in 1.2 scoreless relief innings.
Michael Wiseman (White Lake, Mich./Lakeland) led off the second inning with a home run, and the Warriors tacked on four more runs in the third inning.
Wedesky battled through a four-hitter, as he gave up four runs and five walks with three strikeouts.
In game two, #C.J. Maszal# (Allen Park, Mich.) finished with three hits, while
Kyle Vesey (Brighton, Mich.) had two. Both Warriors drove in three runs apiece.
Brett Shankin (Washington, Mich./Romeo) threw a three-hitter and moved to 6-1 on the season. He walked two and struck out six.
The Warriors scored in each of the first four innings. A two-run single by Vesey in the first inning and a two-run double by Maszal in the third aided the Warriors in taking the weekend series.
Wayne State will host Grand Valley State next weekend in Detroit.
