Ashland, Ohio -- The Wayne State University softball squad (24-18-1 overall, 12-8-1 GLIAC) recorded a 1-0 win over the host Ashland Eagles (22-11 overall, 14-3 GLIAC) on Saturday afternoon in the completion of the contest suspended in the fourth inning on Friday due to weather.
Just before the contest was called on Friday, Warrior sophomore catcher
Brittany Omelanchuk had walked with one out and moved to second on a wild pitch. When play resumed on Saturday,
Rebecca Ryan singled down the left field line, but Omelanchuk had to hold at second.
Rebecca Stanley followed wtih a double to centerfield plating Omelanchuk.
AU pitcher Emlyn Knerem then retired the next two WSU batters on strikes to leave two runners in scoring position.
In the top of the fifth, Wayne State's
Makelle Barski had an infield single and
Logan White followed with a double to left center but Barski was thrown out at the plate. The next two hitters made outs to end the threat.
Omelanchuk was hit by a pitch leading off the sixth and advanced to second on Ryan's sacrifice bunt, but for the third straight inning the next two batters were out.
In the seventh,
Nikki Fulton and Barski each singled, but the next three hitters were unable to get the ball out of the infield.
Sam Cain went the distance for WSU to record her fourth shutout of the year and even her record at 11-11. She struck out three and walked one, while limiting the Eagles to three hits.
Knerem struck out seven and walked one, while scattering eight hits. Barski was the lone Warrior with a multiple-hit game.
After Lyndsey Brandt's leadoff single in the first, Cain retired the next 13 AU batters, until a one-out double in the fifth by Erica Miller. A pop out and a line out, prevented the tying run from scoring. Alex Machen had a leadoff double in the sixth, but Cain retired the next three batters without letting Machen advance.
