Softball Sweeps Lake Erie, 11-3 and 13-2

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University softball team (27-20-1 overall, 15-10-1 GLIAC) recorded a home doubleheader sweep for the first just the third time this year with an 11-3 and 13-2 victories over GLIAC newcomer Lake Erie College (9-35 overall, 1-25 GLIAC) Friday evening at the WSU Softball Stadium.

In the six inning opener, the Warriors pounded out 11 hits after falling behind 3-0 in the top of the first.  Storm third baseman Brittany Sostre smacked a three-run home run with one out in the top of the first.

WSU rebounded with five runs in the bottom of the first and added a single run in the third.  Logan White started with a bunt single and advanced to second on a single down the left field line by Lauren Histed.  Following a line out, both runners moved up on a double steal.  After falling behind 0-2, Brittany Omelanchuk walked to load the bases.  A ground out plated White, while Rebecca Stanley followed with a two-run single up the middle to knot the game at three.  Steph Foreman then drilled a two-run home run on an 0-2 offering form Lake Erie starter Dawn Ondercin.

Alison Allen homered leading off the third for a 6-3 WSU advantage.

In the fourth, Nikki Fulton hit a four-bagger with one out, and Makelle Barski then singled to center field.  After a pitching change, Barski stole second and scored on White's double to left.  With two outs, Allen walked on four pitches and Omelanchuk singled scoring White.

Wayne State ended the contest with two runs in the bottom of the sixth.  White started the frame with an infield single and went to second on a ground out.  Following another walk of Allen, Omelanchuk hit a ball deep into the hole at short, that was booted allowing White to score and Allen to advance to third.  A grounder by Rebecca Ryan allowed Allen to score the game-ending run.

Sam Cain went the distance in the circle for Wayne State allowing three runs (two earned) on three hits with two walks and two strikeouts.

Nine different Warriors had hits in the contest with White going 3-for-4 with three runs scored.  Seven different WSU batters had RBI in the game.

In the nightcap, Wayne State scored the first 13 runs before a two-run home run by Sostre in the bottom of the fifth.

WSU took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second as Omelanchuk had a leadoff double to left center.  Ryan's sacrifice bunt advanced Omelanchuk to third where she scored on a single by Stanley.

Histed had a one-out single in the third and scored on Allen's two-run home run to left.  After Omelanchuk was hit by a pitch, Ryan singled to right and Stanley followed with an RBI single.  Foreman then drilled a three-run home run to left to to chase Storm starter Sara Shields.  Fulton reached on an error, stole second and moved to third on a passed ball preceding a walk to Barski.  White reached on a fielding error to load the bases, and Histed followed with a two-run single to complete the eight-run inning.

WSU completed its scoring with four runs in the fifth.  Histed had a one-out single and scored on Allen's double to right center.  After Allen moved to third on a wild pitch, she scored on Omelanchuk's grounder.  Amanda Burnard had a single advancing Omelanchuk to second, where she scored on a single by Stanley.  Fulton had a two-out single scoring Burnard.

Lauren McLaughlin improved to 15-8 by limiting the Storm to two earned runs on seven hits.  She struck out three and walked one.

Eight different Warriors had hits in the contest with Histed and Stanley each recording three hits.  Allen, Stanley and Foreman each had three RBI in the contest.

The teams will wrap-up their weekend set with a twinbill on Sunday starting at 1:07 p.m.  Both games will be televised live on Comcast Channel 900 with Joe Abramson calling the action.

Wayne State will conclude the regular season with a home doubleheader starting at noon on Sunday vs. Ashland.
