Columbus, Ohio -- The Wayne State University softball squad (17-13 overall, 5-3 GLIAC) won both ends of a doubleheader,
8-4 and
6-0, on Sunday afternoon at Ohio Dominican University (7-21 overall, 2-8 GLIAC). The games were played at ODU's Panther Field.
In the opener, the Warriors started the scoring in the top of the first as junior right fielder
Alison Allen (Redford, Mich. / Farmington Hills Mercy) led off the contest with a double to left center. After junior third baseman
Rebecca Stanley (Waterloo, Ont. / Waterloo C.I.) was hit by a pitch, junior first baseman
Rebecca Ryan (Westland, Mich. / Dearborn Divine Child) advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt. Sophomore catcher
Brittany Omelanchuk (Brooklin, Ont. / Wilson S.S.) followed with an RBI single up the middle.
The hosts went ahead 2-1 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second on a single, an intentional walk and a two-run double by Rebekha Lucas. ODU increased its lead with a two-out triple in the third off the bat of Caitlin Chaney plating the leadoff batter, Erin Sutter, who had singled.
WSU pulled within a run in the top of the fourth as sophomore center
Steph Foreman (Cambridge, Ont. / Preston) had a leadoff single to center and went to second on a sacrifice bunt by pinch-hitter
Makelle Barski (Trenton, Mich.). Freshman second baseman
Nikki Fulton (Stratford, Ont. / St. Michael Catholic S.S.) doubled to left scoring Foreman.
Wayne State took the lead with two runs in the top of the fifth. Ryan had a one-out single up the middle and Omelanchuk worked a walk. A ground out advanced both runners, with Barski, now as the designated player, delivering a two-run single up the middle.
The Panters tied the game at four in the bottom of the frame on back-to-back singles and an RBI double by Jennifer Baker. With runners at second and third and no outs, WSU starting pitcher
Sam Cain (Taylor, Mich. / Kennedy) did her best Houdini impersonation as she induced two consecutive ODU ground outs and a foul out to end the threat.
In the top of the sixth, the Warriors plated four runs for the 8-4 victory. Fulton began the inning with a double to right field. Freshman left fielder
Logan White (Brantford, Ont. / Johnson C.V.I.) greeted relief pitcher Maria Staton with an RBI single to right. Junior shortstop
Lauren Histed (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Utica) followed with a single through the left side. Allen's RBI single scored White to make it 6-4. Stanley and Ryan had back-to-back sacrifice flies scoring Histed and Allen, who each had advanced a base on the throw during Allen's RBI single.
Cain (7-9) allowed four earned runs on eight hits with one strikeout and one walk (intentional) in her seven innings of work.
Shana Etter (2-10) took the loss for ODU. She surrendered five earned runs on eight hits in five innings with one strikeout and two walks. Staton gave up three earned runs on four hits in two innings.
Seven different Warriors recorded an RBI with Barski knocking in a pair of run in the fifth. Allen, Stanley, Omelanchuk and Fulton each had two hits as part of WSU's 12-hit attack.
In the nightcap, WSU scored twice in the bottom of the first on a two-run blast to centerfield by Ryan (her second home run of the year) following a single by Stanley and went on to blank the host Panthers 6-0.
Wayne State scored the final four runs of the contest in the bottom of the third. Freshman
Amanda Burnard (Canton, Mich. / Plymouth) had a leadoff walk and moved to second when Allen was hit by a pitch. Both runners advanced a base on a passed ball with Burnard scoring on Stanley's single. A fielder's choice erased Allen, but Stanley scored via a wild pitch. Foreman's sacrifice fly plated Ryan, while Fulton's double to left scored Omelanchuk who had reached on an error. It was Fulton's fourth two-bagger of the weekend and sixth of the campaign.
Warrior freshman hurler
Lauren McLaughlin (Oakville, Ont. / Holy Trinity) improved to 10-4 by limiting the Panthers to three hits. She retired the first 12 ODU batters before the leadoff hitter in the fifth reached on an error. Ohio Dominican's first hit was by Chaney with one out in the fifth. The Panthers had back-to-back one-out singles in the sixth but a ground out and fly out ended the frame.
McLaughlin, who struck out four and did not walk a batter, faced just four batters over the minimum.
Chaney started in the circle for ODU and allowed six runs (three earned) on four hits in 2 2/3 innings with one strikeout and one walk. Staton held WSU scoreless for the final 3 1/3 innings on two hits.
Stanley and Ryan combined for four of WSU's six hits, four runs scored and three RBI. It was Stanley's 10th multiple-hit contest of the season and the 12th for Ryan. Fulton and Ryan each extended their hitting streaks to seven games.
Wayne State will play a conference doubleheader at Findlay on Wednesday.
