Warriors Drop Two Against Third-Ranked Lakers

Dalman, Vesey homer in series opener

BOX SCORES:  GAME 1  |  GAME 2

DETROIT -
In a battle between the top two teams in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, the Wayne State University baseball team (26-13, 18-9 GLIAC) was swept by third-ranked Grand Valley State University (37-3, 26-1 GLIAC) in a doubleheader Saturday afternoon.

The Lakers won the series opener, 9-4, in nine innings and went on to take the second game, 9-3. The Warriors were swept in a home twinbill for the first time since last March.

Wayne State and GVSU will wrap up the weekend set at noon tomorrow. WSU will also honor its five-member senior class of 2011.

GAME ONE: GRAND VALLEY STATE 9, WAYNE STATE 4 (9 INN.)

The Lakers scored an unearned run in the top of the seventh inning, capitalizing on two WSU errors, and posted a five-run ninth inning to win the opening game of the weekend.

The Warriors finished with four errors in the game, including a pair in the first inning as GVSU jumped out to a 2-0 lead, which was erased in the bottom of the second as Kyle Vesey (Brighton, Mich.) and Caleb Dalman (Hudsonville, Mich.) homered consecutively.

Alex Trojan's (Fenton, Mich./Hartland) two-run single in the third put WSU ahead, 4-2. An RBI single by Garrett Yatch in the top of the fourth made it a 4-3 game, but Josh Wedesky (Fowlerville, Mich.) prevented further damage by fanning Paul Young with the bases loaded.

Wedesky ended up with a no decision, as he finished with a career-high eight strikeouts but walked six batters and allowed three runs (one earned) on five hits.

Billy Hurley (Mississauga, Ont./St. Aloysius Gonzaga) worked two innings of relief, and Matt Rustulka (Windsor, Ont./Riverside) took the loss (1-5) as he surrendered five runs on five hits in the ninth inning.

Christopher Whitney (4-0) earned the relief victory for the Lakers, who had five of their first six hitters in the order record at least two hits. Andrew Trepel went 3-for-3 with two walks, two RBI and two runs scored.

Dalman led WSU offensively as he reached base three times with two hits and a walk.

GAME TWO: GRAND VALLEY STATE 9, WAYNE STATE 3

While the Lakers led for the duration of the game, the Warriors pulled to within two runs until GVSU scored four times in the seventh to put it away.

Michael Wiseman (White Lake, Mich./Lakeland) and Chris Gebara (Troy, Mich.) each finished with three hits, and Dalman went 2-for-2 with a walk in the losing effort.

A two-run double by Steve Anderson was part of GVSU's three-run third inning. The Lakers and Warriors exchanged runs in five straight half innings starting in the top of the fifth.

As a sacrifice fly by Cody Grice made it a 4-0 game, Andrew Ciennik (Waterford, Mich./Mott) drew a bases-loaded walk to put Wayne State on the board. Brad Zambron came on for starter Kyle Schepel to get out of the jam.

Brian Robinson drove in a run with a base hit in the top of the fifth, but in the bottom half Cameron Walker (Clinton Twp., Mich./De La Salle) and #C.J. Maszal# (Allen Park, Mich.) each had RBI singles in a four-hit frame for the Warriors.

The Lakers chased starter Brett Shankin (Washington, Mich./Romeo) from the game in the seventh as the first four batters reached base, including Grice with a two-run single. A pair of runs later came in to score on a wild pitch by Justin Sylvester (Macomb, Mich./Dakota).

Shankin (6-2), who had given up just one run over his previous three starts, walked three and struck out six in the loss. Schepel (8-0) earned the win and Zambron picked up his sixth save of the year.

NOTES
Gebara, who also had a pinch-hit single in the first game, was 4-for-4 with a run scored on the afternoon … Dalman's home run in the opener was his first of the season … the Warriors and Lakers turned a combined seven double plays … of the 17 hits accumulated by WSU in the two games, only two - the home runs by Dalman and Vesey - were for extra bases.
