Warriors to host Ashland in regular-season finale.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University softball squad (28-21-1 overall, 16-11-1 GLIAC) split a conference doubleheader, 6-7 and 1-0, at home on Saturday vs. Lake Erie College (10-36 overall, 2-26 GLIAC).

The Warriors scored five runs in the bottom of the first in Saturday's opener on five hits, but only managed another five hits the rest of the game.

Logan White led off the frame with a single and Lauren Histed followed with a bunt single in which White advanced all the way to third.  Alison Allen beat out a tapper in front of the circle to load the bases.  White scored on a ground out by Brittany Omelanchuk.  A fielder's choice RBI by Rebecca Ryan plated Histed, and after a steal by Ryan, Rebecca Stanley doubled down the right field line scoring two.  Stanley scored on a double down the left field line by Nikki Fulton.  Lyndsie Delprato pitched the entire first inning for the Storm.

WSU pitcher Sam Cain was cruising along with a no-hitter until one out in the fourth when Brittany Sostre singled.  On a double by Haley Rathge, Sostre was called out for missing second.

LEC scored three times in the fifth on back-to-back singles by Fayth Atkins and Brittany Athey, followed by an RBI double by Danielle Finkler.  An infield single scored Athey, while a sacrifice fly plated Finkler.

The Storm recorded four runs on five hits and left two runners on base in the sixth to take a 7-5 lead.  Fulton led off the bottom of the sixth with her fifth home run of the season but the Warriors could not score the equalizer.

Lindsay Hershberger, who entered the game in the second, went four innings allowing just one earned run on five hits to earn her first win of the season.  Sara Shields retired the six batters she faced to record the save.

Cain allowed seven earned runs on 11 hits in six innings of work before Lauren McLaughlin retired three of the four batters she faced in the seventh.

White, Omelanchuk and Fulton each had two hits in the contest.

The nightcap was a pitchers duel with McLaughlin tossing her team-leading fifth shutout of the season.  She struck out two and walked one while facing 26 batters.  She scattered four hits to improve to 16-8.

LEC's biggest threat came in the sixth as Jeniffer Gratz had a leadoff single and went to second on sacrifice bunt.  After the No. 3 hitter, Juliana Brotzman, fouled out and Sostre was intentionally walked, Ali Heming grounded out on a 2-0 pitch.

Wayne State's lone run came in the second as Ryan doubled down the left field line and advanced to third on a wild pitch.  After two straight Warriors were retired, Fulton fouled off two consecutive 0-2 pitches before singling through the left side scoring Ryan.

Storm hurler Lauren Malicki limited WSU to one run on six hits with one walk and one strikeout.

Wayne State will conclude the regular-season with a home doubleheader on Sunday, May 1 starting at noon against GLIAC South Division rival Ashland University.
