BOX SCORES:  GAME 1  |  GAME 2

MIDLAND, Mich. -
The Wayne State University baseball team (17-7, 9-3 GLIAC) split a doubleheader at Northwood University (11-11, 6-6 GLIAC) on Saturday in two narrow results.

The Timberwolves took game one in 10 innings, 3-2, while the Warriors earned a 2-0 victory in the second game behind senior right-hander Brett Shankin's (Washington, Mich./Romeo) second shutout of the season.

WSU and Northwood will complete the four-game series starting tomorrow at noon.

GAME ONE: NORTHWOOD 3, WAYNE STATE 2 (10 INN.)

The Timberwolves won the series opener on a walk-off sacrifice fly by Austin Rinard in the 10th inning, allowing Jake Labrecque, who led off the inning with a double, to score the winning run.

Brad Guenther (Ann Arbor, Mich./Saline) finished with three hits, including an RBI single in the top of the seventh which tied the score at 2-2.

#C.J. Maszal# (Allen Park, Mich.) also had three hits, the first of which was a leadoff single in the second. He would eventually score on a balk to account for WSU's first run, giving the Warriors a 1-0 lead which would hold until the fourth, when back-to-back RBI singles by Michael Goodwin and Brett Lechner put the Timberwolves ahead.

Matt Rustulka (Windsor, Ont./Riverside) was saddled with the tough-luck loss (1-3) despite pitching an effective 5.2 innings in relief of Tyler Loehr (Brighton, Mich.). Rustulka allowed only two hits and two walks while striking out four.

Northwood's Casey Ingle scattered seven hits over seven innings before being lifted for Jordan Schwellenback (2-0), who tossed three scoreless frames and gave up just two hits.

GAME TWO: WAYNE STATE 2, NORTHWOOD 0

Shankin (4-1) allowed just five hits and struck out six in the third shutout of his career. Twice he escaped situations with runners on second and third, once in the first and again in the sixth. He surrendered just one hit over the other five innings in the game.

Aided by a Northwood error, Wayne State scored two unearned runs in the fourth inning, as Cameron Walker (Clinton Twp., Mich./De La Salle)and Guenther each hit RBI singles.

Walker was one of three Warriors with two hits in the win, along with Michael Wiseman (White Lake, Mich./Lakeland) and Maszal.

Andrew Thompson (5-2) took the loss for Northwood, allowing eight hits and two walks over 5.2 innings.

NOTES
