BOX SCORES: GAME 3 | GAME 4
DETROIT - The Wayne State University baseball team (26-15, 18-11 GLIAC) was swept at home in a four-game series for the first time since 2003, losing the final two games of a weekend series to third-ranked Grand Valley State University (39-3, 28-1 GLIAC) on Sunday afternoon.
The Lakers won Sunday's first game, 8-1, before taking the series finale, 12-4, to extend their winning streak to 19 games.
Despite the setbacks, Wayne State remains in second place in the conference with six games remaining in the regular season. WSU will host Saginaw Valley State in its home finale Wednesday at 2:00 p.m.
GAME THREE: GRAND VALLEY STATE 8, WAYNE STATE 1
Wayne State was held to just five hits by Ryan Garman (7-1), who allowed just one unearned run and two walks in six innings, and Cory Rademacher.
Michael Wiseman (White Lake, Mich./Lakeland) reached on an error to lead off the fourth and came in to score on a base hit by
Kyle Vesey (Brighton, Mich.) to produce WSU's lone run, which was also the final run scored in the game.
The Lakers took a 2-0 lead in the first inning and scored three times in the third and fourth innings. Paul Young's two run double in the fourth made it an 8-0 game.
Alex Pierse (Clinton Twp., Mich./De La Salle) and
Jeff Sorenson (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson) pitched effectively in relief of starter
Tyler Loehr (Brighton, Mich.), who was lifted from the game after 3.1 innings. Loehr (2-5) was tagged for all eight runs on eight hits.
GAME FOUR: GRAND VALLEY STATE 12, WAYNE STATE 4
The Warriors took a 4-3 lead in the third inning before the Lakers scored nine unanswered runs, including five in the seventh inning.
Caleb Dalman (Hudsonville, Mich.), who had a team-high seven hits in the weekend series, and Wiseman had two hits apiece in the series finale.
Brad Guenther (Ann Arbor, Mich./Saline) reached base three times, walking twice and being hit by a pitch once.
Cody Grice and Steve Anderson each homered as part of their two-hit efforts, and drove in five runs apiece for GVSU. The Lakers also drew a total of nine walks off the first three WSU pitchers.
A three-run homer by Grice in the top of the third inning put the Lakers on the board first, but WSU answered in the bottom half with a four-run rally, highlighted by a two-run single by Wiseman.
Wayne State's lead was short-lived as Anderson and Derrik Strzalkowski were consecutively hit by pitches with the bases loaded in the fourth. A two-run single from Grice in the fifth made it a 7-4 game.
The Warriors remained within striking distance until GVSU's five-run seventh which included a grand slam by Anderson.
Kirk Stambaugh (Sylvania, Ohio/Southview) took the loss (1-1), allowing five runs on five hits with five walks in 3.2 innings. He struck out a season-high six for the second straight start.
