Warriors Eliminate Cardinals With 11-3 Win

WSU has rematch with GVSU tomorrow at noon

CHILLICOTHE, Ohio - The Wayne State University baseball team (32-18) matched its 2010 season win total and eliminated Saginaw Valley State University (25-24) from the GLIAC Tournament with a 11-3 victory on Friday night at V.A. Memorial Stadium.

The Warriors bounced back from Friday afternoon's 12-1 loss to Grand Valley State and earned an opportunity to face the Lakers again Saturday at 12:00 in the championship game. The Cardinals, meanwhile, eliminated Ashland from the tournament before being ousted by WSU.

Senior Tyler Loehr (Brighton, Mich.) went the distance for Wayne State, allowing three runs on three hits. He walked seven but also struck out nine to match his career high.

The Cardinals scored twice in the first inning and once more in the third before Loehr (4-5) settled in and retired 18 straight into the ninth inning.

Offensive the Warriors churned out 15 hits as six players finished with at least two hits. #C.J. Maszal# (Allen Park, Mich.), Michael Wiseman (White Lake, Mich./Lakeland) and Kyle Vesey (Brighton, Mich.) had three hits apiece. Wiseman had four RBI and three runs scored, while Vesey drove in three runs.

Brad Guenther (Ann Arbor, Mich./Saline), Andrew Ciennik (Waterford, Mich./Mott) and #J.J. Ciennik# (Waterford, Mich./Mott) all posted two-hit games.

The Warriors quickly erased a 2-0 deficit in the bottom of the first inning as the first four batters reached on hits. Maszal led off with a home run to center, and Andrew Ciennik doubled in Guenther and later came in to score on a base hit by Wiseman.

An RBI double by Mike Van Alst in the top of the third accounted for the last baserunner permitted by Loehr until he walked a pair in the ninth.

Wayne State held its ground with a one-run lead through the middle innings before breaking the game open, as Wiseman doubled in two runs in the seventh and two more in the eighth as part of a five-run surge.

Derek Kilmer (0-1) pitched 3.2 innings in relief of starter Eric Hummel, who tossed a two-hit shutout against the Warriors on April 13 but was lifted after only one-third of an inning Friday night..
