CHILLICOTHE, Ohio - Opening the second day of the 2011 GLIAC Tournament at V.A. Memorial Stadium, the Wayne State University baseball team (31-18) lost to No. 1-ranked Grand Valley State (47-3),
12-1, on Friday afternoon.
Per the double-elimination format of the tournament, Wayne State will face either Ashland or Saginaw Valley State tonight at 6:00 p.m.
The Lakers, who have won 27 straight games, racked up 20 hits off four WSU pitchers. The first seven batters in the order had at least two hits, while all nine had at least one.
Cody Grice led the way for GVSU with a four-hit game, finishing a home run short of a cycle. He scored three times and drove in two runs.
Cory Phillips and Andrew Trepel had three hits apiece, and Paul Young scored three times with two RBI.
For the Warriors,
Michael Wiseman (White Lake, Mich./Lakeland) finished with three of WSU's seven hits.
Caleb Dalman (Hudsonville, Mich.), who has reached base safely in 12 straight games, had two hits.
GVSU starter Ryan Garman pitched seven strong innings, allowing five hits with no walks and five strikeouts. The only run scored off Garman occurred in the second inning when
Kyle Vesey (Brighton, Mich.) came in on a passed ball.
Josh Wedesky (Fowlerville, Mich.) absorbed his second loss of the season (8-2) after surrendering five runs on seven hits in 2.2 innings.
