Baseball Drops Rematch With Lakers In GLIAC Tourney Final

Wiseman has two hits, totals nine for tournament

CHILLICOTHE, Ohio - Playing in the GLIAC Tournament championship game for the second straight year, the Wayne State University baseball team (32-19) lost a 9-4 decision to top-ranked Grand Valley State University (48-3) on Saturday afternoon at V.A. Memorial Stadium.

Wayne State, the 2010 conference champion, briefly held a 3-2 lead before GVSU tied it in the third. It remained a 3-3 game until the sixth when the Lakers scored four times en route to their eighth GLIAC Tournament title in program history.

Michael Wiseman (White Lake, Mich./Lakeland) and Caleb Dalman (Hudsonville, Mich.) had two hits apiece, collectively accounting for half of WSU's hit output against three Laker pitchers including starter Joe Jablonski (6-1).

Wiseman led the Warriors for the week, finishing 9-for-18 at the plate with three doubles, five RBI and four runs scored. Dalman went 5-for-15 in the tournament and has reached base in 14 straight games.

Every GVSU batter had at least one hit Saturday, and five finished with two hits. Cory Phillips and Paul Young, the top two hitters in the order, went a combined 4-for-8 with three RBI and three runs scored. Cody Grice, the GLIAC Player of the Year, drove in two runs as well as the Lakers extended their winning streak to 28 games.

Grand Valley State promptly loaded the bases with nobody out in the bottom of the first, but Alex Pierse (Clinton Twp., Mich./De La Salle) limited the damage to two runs as he induced a double play and recorded his first of five strikeouts.

Wayne State answered with two runs in the top of the second, highlighted by an RBI single by Phil Swanson (Rochester Hills, Mich./Stoney Creek). The Warriors also capitalized on one of four GVSU errors in the game, as Dalman came in to score with two outs.

Kyle Vesey (Brighton, Mich.), who was 6-for-14 with four RBI in the tournament, drove in a run in the third to put the Warriors ahead. Grice answered with an RBI infield single in the bottom of the inning.

Pierse (5-4) worked out of a jam in the fifth but was not as fortunate in the sixth as the Lakers scored four runs off Pierse and Kirk Stambaugh (Sylvania, Ohio/Southview). A bases-loaded walk to Dan Ponegalek gave the Lakers the lead, while Phillips added a two-run single and Young drove in a run with a base hit.

The teams exchanged runs over three half-innings late in the game. An RBI single by Cameron Walker (Clinton Twp., Mich./De La Salle) gave WSU its final run in the top of the eighth.

GVSU closer Brad Zambron pitched the final 1.1 innings to close it out for the Lakers, who will be the No. 1 seed in the NCAA Midwest Regional next week. The Warriors, who were ranked sixth in the latest poll released Wednesday, will hope to extend their postseason when the NCAA announces the regional fields Sunday night.
