EASTLAKE, Ohio - The Wayne State University baseball team (28-17, 20-13 GLIAC) clinched a berth in the 2011 GLIAC Tournament after splitting a doubleheader against Lake Erie College (21-24, 14-18 GLIAC) on Saturday afternoon at Classic Park.
The Warriors lost game one, 2-1, but claimed a spot in the postseason with a 3-1 win in game two. Saturday's split coupled with SVSU's sweep against Hillsdale eliminated Lake Erie from playoff contention.
Wayne State and Lake Erie will wrap up the regular season tomorrow at noon.
GAME ONE: LAKE ERIE 2, WAYNE STATE 1
Adam Beach tossed a one-hitter, walking five and striking out nine. The Warriors scored their lone run in the top of the second inning as
Michael Wiseman (White Lake, Mich./Lakeland) led off the inning with WSU's only hit, and later scored on a bases-loaded walk to #J.J. Ciennik# (Waterford, Mich./Mott).
The Warriors also loaded the bases in the sixth inning but were unable to score.
Lake Erie took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI double by Brayan Cacique. The Storm reclaimed their slim lead on Zachary Mosbarger's RBI triple, which accounted for the final run scored in the game.
Josh Wedesky (Fowlerville, Mich.) took the loss, his first of the year (8-1), as he also went the distance and allowed three walks with three strikeouts. After giving up four hits over the first two innings, he surrendered only three over the rest of the game.
GAME TWO: WAYNE STATE 3, LAKE ERIE 1
Down 1-0 in the top of the fifth, Wayne State tied the score and posted two unearned runs in the top of the seventh to split the doubleheader.
Lake Erie's lone run came on an RBI single by Brandon James in the fourth.
Chris Gebara's (Troy, Mich.) sacrifice fly in the fifth brought in
Phil Swanson (Rochester Hills, Mich./Stoney Creek) and tied it at 1-1.
An error and a wild pitch by relief pitcher Doug Fox contributed to
Andrew Ciennik (Waterford, Mich./Mott) scoring the go-ahead run. Gebara added an insurance run with an RBI single.
Brett Shankin (Washington, Mich./Romeo), who struck out eight and walked none, allowed just six hits in the complete-game victory. He improved to 7-2 on the year.
NOTES
Saturday were the first-ever meetings between WSU and Lake Erie … Wiseman tied
Ryan LaPensee's school record with 200 career games played … Shankin's complete game was the 13th of his career.
