Midland, Mich. -- The Wayne State University softball team (30-24-1 overall) rallied with four runs in the top of the seventh, then added five more in the top of the 10th for a
10-6 victory over Grand Valley State University (38-14 overall) Saturday afternoon at Northwood's Fisher Stadium.
After falling behind 3-0 in the first three innings, the Warriors scored once in the fifth as
Nikki Fulton led off the frame with a home run down the left field line. The Lakers answered with a run in the bottom of the fifth making it 4-1.
In the top of the seventh, WSU's
Lauren McLaughlin singled up the middle with one out.
Logan White followed with a bloop single into left center advancing
Makelle Barski to second base. After a pop out,
Alison Allen smacked a three-run home run over the left field fence on the first pitch to knot the game at four.
Brittany Omelanchuk then drilled a 2-2 offering from Andrea Nicholson over the left field wall.
The Lakers, who left 13 runners on base in the contest, tied the game in the bottom of the seventh on three hits and left the bases loaded.
Each team left two runners on base in the eighth, and a single runner in the ninth.
The international tie-breaker rule was invoked for the 10th inning with
Rebecca Stanley being placed on second. Following a strikeout, Stanley went to third on a wild pitch.
Steph Foreman had an RBI single to center on a 2-0 pitch to snap the 5-5 deadlock. Barski had an infield single with White plating Foreman with a single down the left field line. A ground out put two runners in scoring position and GVSU decided to pitch to the 2010 GLIAC Player of the Year Allen, who homered over the center field fence on the first pitch.
The Lakers scored once in the bottom of the 10th on a sacrifice fly, but back-to-back ground outs ended the contest.
McLaughlin (17-10) went the distance allowing 16 hits and six runs (five earned) with three strikeouts and three walks.
Nicholson started in the circle for GVSU and was relieved by Hannah Santora after the back-to-back home runs in the seventh. Nicholson allowed five earned runs on eight hits in 6 2/3 innings. Santora (10-3) surrenedered five runs (four earned) on nine hits in 3 1/3 innings with two strikeouts and zero walks.
Allen, Omelanchuk and Barski each had three hits in the contest with Allen recording six of WSU's 10 RBI.
Wayne State will play Ferris State in an elimination game later today.
