BOXSCORES: GAME 3 | GAME 4
EASTLAKE, Ohio - The Wayne State University baseball team (30-17, 22-13 GLIAC) closed out the regular season and clinched second place in the conference with a pair of 3-2 victories over Lake Erie College (21-25, 14-20 GLIAC) on Sunday afternoon at Classic Park.
All four games of the weekend series were low scoring, as the winning team had three runs or less in every contest. The Warriors and Storm combined to score just 17 runs in the series.
Wayne State reached the 30-win plateau for the fifth time in school history and the third time in the last four years. The Warriors finished just one conference win shy of their 2010 total.
WSU will face Ashland (30-19, 19-15 GLIAC) in the first round of the GLIAC Tournament on Thursday in Chillicothe, Ohio. The two teams have met in the postseason, either at the conference or regional tournament, each of the last four years.
GAME THREE: WAYNE STATE 3, LAKE ERIE 2
Wayne State erased a 2-0 deficit with a run in the fifth inning and two in the sixth, allowing
Tyler Loehr (Brighton, Mich.) to pick up his third victory of the season.
After surrendering a run and two hits in both the first and third innings, Loehr (3-5) retired 11 straight and 14 of the last 15 hitters. He struck out seven and earned his first win since April 17 against Ohio Dominican.
Kyle Vesey (Brighton, Mich.) drew a one-out walk in the fifth, stole second and scored on a base hit by
Phil Swanson (Rochester Hills, Mich./Stoney Creek). The Warriors loaded the bases in the sixth, as
Alex Trojan (Fenton, Mich./Hartland) hit an RBI single and Vesey produced the go-ahead run on a fielder's choice.
Michael Wiseman (White Lake, Mich./Lakeland) went 2-for-3 with a run scored, his team-best 20th multiple-hit game this season. The Storm had multi-hit efforts from Matt Toth, who scored both Lake Erie runs, and Ryan Rua.
Doug Fox (1-2) took the loss for the second straight game, as he came on in relief of Brad Raley who struck out five and allowed three hits and a walk in five innings.
GAME FOUR: WAYNE STATE 3, LAKE ERIE 2
For the first time in the series, Wayne State was the first team to score as the Warriors took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning on an RBI single by
Brent Weil (Marine City, Mich.) and a sacrifice fly from
Cameron Walker (Clinton Twp., Mich./De La Salle). It became a 3-0 game as
Caleb Dalman (Hudsonville, Mich.) scored on a wild pitch in the fifth.
The Storm cut it to 3-2 in the sixth, as Brayan Cacique drove in a run with a sacrifice fly and Brandon James scored on a two-out error.
Billy Hurley (Mississauga, Ont./St. Aloysius Gonzaga) came on in relief of
Alex Pierse (Clinton Twp., Mich./De La Salle) to close it out in the seventh and, despite a walk and two Storm hits, picked up his seventh save of the year.
Pierse improved to 5-3 on the season, allowing just one earned run on four hits. He walked a pair and struck out five. Zack Justice (0-1) took the loss for Lake Erie.
Vesey went 2-for-3 with a run scored, while Toth led the Storm offense with three of LEC's six hits.
NOTES
Wiseman broke the school record for career games played (202) … he went 5-for-12 in the series … Hurley's appearance was the only inning pitched by a WSU non-starter for the weekend … Dalman has reached base safely in 10 straight games.
