Softball Falls 1-0, Downs Northwood 5-1 on Next To Last Day in Florida

Warriors have two games left on Spring Break Trip.

Kissimmee, Fla. -- The Wayne State University softball team (7-9 overall) allowed just two runs in two games on Friday but split its two contests.  The Warriors lost 1-0 to 23rd-ranked Augustana (14-3 overall), but rebounded for a 5-1 non-conference win over Northwood (3-6 overall) in the nightcap.

The lone run of Friday's opener came in the top of the fourth as Viking catcher Elizabeth Murray had a leadoff double against Warrior senior pitcher Sam Cain (Taylor, Mich. / Kennedy).  After a walk to designated player Jenelle Trautmann, a 6-5 fielder's choice erased Murray.  A single by AC's Kelsey Kalkman loaded the bases and first baseman Chelsey Durland delivered an RBI single on a 1-0 offering plating Trautman with the game's only run.  A strong relay but the WSU cut down the potential second run at the plate.

Meanwhile, Augustana hurler Ashley Meyer (6-2) limited the Warriors to four hits, two of which came in the first inning.

In the bottom of the first, sophomore left fielder Logan White (Brantford, Ont. / Johnson C.V.I.) had a one-out single, and senior first baseman Rebecca Ryan (Westland, Mich. / Dearborn Divine Child) singled with two outs.  Meyer retired six straight Warrior batters starting with the third out of the first inning until White was hit by a pitch with two outs in the third.

After seven consecutive Wayne State hitters made outs, sophomore second baseman Nikki Fulton (Stratford, Ont. / St. Michael Catholic S.S.) doubled leading off the bottom of the sixth but was erased on a lineout double play to end the frame.

Junior right fielder Stephanie Foreman (Cambridge, Ont. / Preston) had a one-out single in the seventh but was erased on a game-ending force play.

Cain struck out three and walked two while limiting the Vikings to one earned run on six hits.

Meyer recorded one strikeout and no walks.

Wayne State led from start to finish in the triumph over Northwood.

Senior Alison Allen (Redford, Mich. / Farmington Hills Mercy) led off the game with a single, moved to second on a single by White.  A walk to Fulton loaded the bases, with Allen scoring on a wild pitch.

WSU extended its lead in the third on a leadoff single by White and Fulton worked another walk.  A sacrifice bunt by Ryan advanced both runners with White scoring on Foreman's sacrifice fly.

Both teams plated a run in the fourth.  Senior shortstop Lauren Histed (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Utica) had a two-out walk and stole second.  She came all the way around to score on a Northwood miscue.

The Timberwolves lone run came as the leadoff batter in the fourth, Andrea Martin, reached on an error and advanced to second on the throw.  She went to third on a ground out and scored another ground out.

WSU tallied two insurance runs in the seventh as Fulton had a one-out single and Ryan followed with an RBI double.  Foreman then knocked in Ryan with a double.

NU had four base runners in the contest.  In addition to Martin in the fourth, Lindsay Obremski walked in the third, Malinda Smith singled in the sixth and Stacey Klonowski singled in the seventh.

Warrior pitcher Brianna Lee (Canton, Mich. / Salem) earned her first collegiate victory by recording five strikeouts and one walk, while limiting Northwood to one run on two hits.

White led Wayne State with three hits, while both Ryan and Foreman had two hits including a double.  Fulton went 1-for-2 with two walks as the top four batters in WSU's lineup each scored a run.
