Detroit -- The Wayne State softball team (8-10 overall) will open GLIAC play this weekend, facing three North Division foes over six games. The Warriors return to Detroit after trips to Alabama, North Carolina, and Florida where they faced some tough competition.
WSU started the season Feb. 17 in Alabama at the Charger Chillout. The Warriors played four of their six scheduled games and finished the tournament 1-3, with the lone win being a 9-1, five-inning decision against West Georgia. The Warriors lost two close decisions to West Alabama, 7-5, and Northern Kentucky, 3-2, before then-26th-ranked Indianapolis bested WSU 13-0 in five innings.
The Warriors were back in action a week later in North Carolina at the Catawba College Invitational. WSU snapped the three-game skid and in fact won three straight, including senior pitcher
Sam Cain's (Taylor, Mich./Kennedy) complete game, 1-0, shutout win over Shippensburg. WSU defeated Lock Haven and East Stroudsburg before then-32nd ranked Kutztown and unranked UMass-Lowell derailed the Warriors.
Wayne State headed to Florida to participate in the Rebel Spring games over spring break. The Warriors started the week on a winning note before the rains washed out two games. However, California (Pa.) and seventh-ranked Indianapolis took two close decisions. The best game of the trip came March 14 against Minnesota State-Moorhead. The Warrior bats came alive as WSU cruised to a 19-5 victory.
WSU dropped its next two games, including one against 23
rd-ranked Augustana (S.D.), but the Warriors earned two more victories including a 5-1 win over Northwood. Wayne State ended the trip with a 3-0 loss to Augustana.
