Softball Falls 3-1, 12-6 To Grand Valley

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University softball team (8-14 overall, 0-4 GLIAC) dropped a pair of GLIAC contests, 3-1 and 12-6, to 18th-ranked Grand Valley State (20-4 overall, 3-1 GLIAC) Saturday afternoon at the WSU Softball Stadium.

In the opener, WSU senior pitcher Sam Cain (Taylor, Mich. / Kennedy) had limited the high-powered Laker offense to six hits and no runs through five innings, while the Warriors scored their lone run in the bottom of the third on a trio of hits.

Senior shortstop Lauren Histed (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Utica) singled with two outs to start the rally.  Sophomore second baseman Nikki Fulton (Stratford, Ont. / St. Michael Catholic S.S.) and classmate Logan White (Brantford, Ont. / Johnson C.V.I.) followed with back-to-back singles with Histed crossing the plate on a bounced throw home by GVSU.

In the top of the sixth, Laker backstop Carli Raisutis singled.  After a fielder's choice, Kayleigh Bertram advanced to second on a passed ball.  Tonya Calkins worked a walk and Emily Jones smacked a three-run home run over the left center field for her first round-tripper of the season.

Laker pitcher Andrea Nicholson retired the last six WSU batters to improve to 8-3.  She struck out one and did not walk a batter.

Cain allowed three earned runs on nine hits with four strikeouts and two walks.

Grand Valley scored twice in the bottom of the first in the nightcap, but the Warriors rallied with five runs in the top of the third.

Fulton had a leadoff walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by White.  A pair of errors on the next play allowed Fulton to score.  Senior first baseman Rebecca Ryan (Westland, Mich. / Dearborn Divine Child) had a single to put runners on the corners.  Junior outfielder Stephanie Foreman (Cambridge, Ont. / Preston) walked to load the bases and sophomore catcher Julie Ingratta (Markham, Ont.) delivered a two-run double to right center to put the Warriors in front 3-2.  Foreman scored an unearned run on a ground out by freshman center fielder Shannon Hilton (Gilford, Ont. / Bradford), while Ingratta scored on an RBI single by sophomore Amanda Burnard (Canton, Mich. / Plymouth).

The Lakers pounded out six hits off WSU pitchers Briana Lee (Canton, Mich. / Salem) and Emily Wickerham (North Branch, Mich.) scoring four times in the frame.

In the bottom of the fourth, GVSU tallied five runs on five hits off Cain.  A Warrior error contributed one unearned run.

Wayne State scored its final run in the top of the sixth as Hilton had a leadoff double, advanced to third on a groundout and scored on Histed's RBI groundout.

Lee returned to the circle for the final two innings (fifth and sixth).  She finished the contest with three walks and one strikeout in four innings, while allowing five earned runs on seven hits.  Wickerham surrendered two runs on four hits in her inning of work but was tagged with the loss.

Hannah Santora earned the win for Grand Valley despite allowing six runs (three earned) on six hits with one strikeout and four walks.

WSU continues its homestand on Sunday with a noon start against Ferris State.
