Softball Takes Two, 10-7 And 6-1, From Visiting Ferris State

Fulton powers Warriors with two home runs and four RBI.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University softball squad (10-14 overall, 2-4 GLIAC) snapped a five-game losing streak by sweeping visiting Ferris State University (10-12 overall, 2-4 GLIAC), 10-7 and 6-1, Sunday afternoon at the WSU Softball Stadium.

The teams combined for 17 runs, 20 hits, and eight errors in the opener with the Warriors rallying for the victory.

After the Bulldogs scored three times on three hits in the top of the first, WSU scored twice in the bottom of the frame.

Senior Alison Allen (Redford, Mich. / Farmington Hills Mercy) had a two-out single and scored on a double to left center by classmate Rebecca Ryan (Westland, Mich. / Dearborn Divine Child).  Sophomore Julie Ingratta (Markham, Ont.) then singled down the right field line to plate Ryan.

FSU added an unearned run in the second on two WSU errors plus a passed ball to increase its lead to 4-2.

Wayne State tallied five runs on five hits with the Bulldogs committing two miscues in the bottom of the inning.  Freshman center fielder Shannon Hilton (Gilford, Ont. / Bradford) started the rally with a double down the left field line.  With one out, senior shortstop Lauren Histed (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Utica) reached on an infield single.  FSU's first error loaded the bases, and an error on the following play allowed two runs to score to knot the game at four.  Ryan then delivered an RBI single up the middle with Allen later scoring on a wild pitch.  Ryan made it 7-4 as she scored on a single by junior outfielder Stephanie Foreman (Cambridge, Ont. / Preston).

Ferris State tied the game in the third on a three-run home run by Michelle Tononi.

WSU quickly broke the deadlock with two runs on two hits with another pair of FSU errors in the bottom of the third.  Freshman catcher Emily Bryce (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester Adams) reached on an error, went to second on a single by sophomore second baseman Nikki Fulton (Stratford, Ont. / St. Michael Catholic S.S.), and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt.  Allen reached on a fielding error by Tononi for the second consecutive inning, and for the second straight frame two runs scored.

The Bulldogs had just two hits over the final four innings as junior Emily Wickerham (North Branch, Mich.) earned the win in relief.  Senior Sam Cain (Taylor, Mich. / Kennedy) notched her second career save by retiring all six batters she faced.

Eight of WSU's nine starters had at least one hit with Ryan and Ingratta each going 3-for-4.  Histed also had two hits in the game as four different Warriors scored twice.

Cain was very efficient in the nightcap, throwing just 90 pitches to record the victory.  She limited the Bulldogs to one unearned run on three hits with four strikeouts and two walks.

FSU's Amy Dunleavy (4-3) was tagged with the loss after surrendering six earned runs on seven hits in 3.2 innings.  She struck out two and walked two.

Fulton homered on the second pitch of the game sending Dunleavy's offering over the fence just to the right of the hitting background wall.

In the top of the third, Hilton had a leadoff single and advanced one base each on back-to-back groundouts.  Sophomore Logan White (Brantford, Ont. / Johnson C.V.I.) extended her hitting streak to five games with a single down the left line which scored Hilton .

FSU's run in the bottom of the inning came without a hit on an error, a passed ball, a ground out and a sacrifice fly.

Wayne State expanded its lead to 6-1 in the top of the fourth by scoring four times on three hits.

Ingratta doubled on the first pitch as the FSU right fielder and second baseman became tangled up after the ball landed.  Foreman walked on four pitches and, following back-to-back outs, Histed produced an RBI single to right.  Fulton then hammered the next pitch over the right-center field fence for a three-run blast.  It was Fulton's first career multi-homer game, and the first for a Warrior since Allen hit two round-trippers on May 7, 2011, against Grand Valley in the GLIAC tournament.

Ferris managed three hits over the final four innings.

Fulton set WSU season-bests with eight total bases on the two home runs, while also tying the squad's season-high with four RBI in a game.

Wayne State will continue its GLIAC homestand this coming Saturday (March 31) and Sunday (April 1) with a four-game series against conference leader Ohio Dominican (12-10 overall, 6-0 GLIAC).
