Softball Sweeps GLIAC Leader Ohio Dominican, 6-0 and 22-4

Cain tosses 3-hit shutout in opener; Warriors pound 21 hits in nightcap.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University softball team (12-14 overall, 4-4 GLIAC) swept GLIAC leading Ohio Dominican University (12-16 overall, 6-2 GLIAC) by scores of 6-0 and 22-4 on Saturday afternoon at the WSU Softball Stadium.

Warrior senior pitcher Sam Cain (Taylor, Mich. / Kennedy) retired the first 13 Panther batters before a one-out single in the fifth by Caitlin Jividen.  ODU had back-to-back singles leading off the sixth, but the next six Panther hitters were retired to end the contest.  Cain finished with a three-hitter in recording her seventh career shutout.

Wayne State scored the first run of the opener in the bottom of the second as junior outfielder Stephanie Foreman (Cambridge, Ont. / Preston) reached on a one-out error and scored on an RBI single by sophomore Julie Ingratta (Markham, Ont.).

The Warriors garnered five runs in the fourth on four hits and two ODU miscues.  Senior first baseman Rebecca Ryan (Westland, Mich. / Dearborn Divine Child) reached when the Panther first baseman could not find the bag.  Foreman followed with a single, and Ingratta advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt.    Freshman center fielder Shannon Hilton (Gilford, Ont. / Bradford) laced a two-run double to left center increasing the Warrior lead to 3-0.  Freshman catcher Emily Bryce (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester Adams) added an RBI single and later scored on a wild pitch.  Sophomore left fielder Logan White (Brantford, Ont. / Johnson C.V.I.) had an RBI single to left center to complete the scoring.

WSU out-hit ODU 9-3 in the contest, with White being the lone Warrior with a multiple-hit contest as eight different starters had at least one hit.  White also extended her hitting streak to six games.

In the nightcap, Wayne State scored the second-most runs in program history posting a 22-4 five-inning triumph over the Panthers.

The school record of 24 runs came vs. St. Joseph's College on April 25, 1998, in Joilet, Ill., during a GLIAC-GLVC Crossover event.

WSU had innings of 3, 2, 8, 0 and 9 against Ohio Dominican including at least one hit in every inning.

Sophomore second baseman Nikki Fulton (Stratford, Ont. / St. Michael Catholic S.S.) went 5-for-5 in game two with five runs scored and five RBI.  Her 10 total bases (two doubles and a grand slam home run) is tied-for-third most in program history, while her five hits are believed to be a school record.

White went 3-for-4 with four runs scored, while senior third baseman Alison Allen (Redford, Mich. / Farmington Hills Mercy) went 3-for-3 with three RBI and four runs scored.  WSU's career home run leader smacked her first of the season, a two-run blast in the top of the second, making the score 5-2.

Senior Rebecca Stanley (Waterloo, Ont. / Waterloo C.I.) had two two-run singles in a nine-run fifth inning.  Foreman had three hits, two runs scored and three RBI, while Hilton contributed three hits as part of WSU's 21-hit attack.

Freshman Briana Lee () earned her second win of the season.  She allowed four earned runs on nine hits with one strikeout and one walk.

Rachael Stanzel (8-7) suffered the loss after surrendering 13 runs (11 earned) on 11 hits in three innings of work.  She had one walk and one strikeout.  Kelsey Seeds pitched the final two innings.  She only faced three batters in the fourth thanks to a double play grounder, but allowed nine runs on nine hits in the fifth.

The teams will conclude the four-game weekend series with a twinbill starting at noon on Sunday at the WSU Softball Stadium.
