Midland, Mich. -- The Wayne State University softball team (22-18 overall, 14-8 GLIAC) extended its season-best winning streak to seven games with a pair of road wins at Northwood University (15-21 overall, 12-12 GLIAC) on Saturday afternoon. The Warriors led from start to finish in claiming a 7-4 triumph in game one. In the nightcap, WSU posted a 9-1 victory in five innings.
In the opener, Wayne State snapped a scoreless tie with a four-run second inning. Junior outfielder
Stephanie Foreman (Cambridge, Ont. / Preston) had a one-out double and advanced to third on a wild pitch. After a walk to sophomore
Julie Ingratta (Markham, Ont.), Foreman scored the first run of the game on an infield single by freshman center fielder
Shannon Hilton (Gilford, Ont. / Bradford).
Freshman catcher
Emily Bryce (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester Adams) had an RBI single after falling behind 0-2 in the count. A single up the middle by senior shortstop
Lauren Histed (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Utica) plated Hilton, while Bryce scored on a two-out single by sophomore left fielder
Logan White (Brantford, Ont. / Johnson C.V.I.).
The Warriors increased their advantage in the third as Foreman walked and scored on a double by Ingratta to make it 5-0. The Timberwolves cut their deficit to 5-2 by scoring twice on four hits in the bottom of the third.
Each team scored once in the fourth and once in the sixth giving WSU the 7-4 win.
Senior pitcher
Sam Cain (Taylor, Mich. / Kennedy) scattered 10 hits in allowing four runs. She struck out two and walked four to improve her record to 14-9. Cain has won nine of her last 10 decisions.
Catie Kaliszuk (6-7) started in the circle for NU but was lifted after allowing four earned runs on five hits in two innings. Reliever Maddison Sebald surrendered three earned runs on five hits in five innings.
Each team had 10 hits in the contest, but Northwood stranded a season-high 12 runners in the game, which included leaving the bases loaded three times in the game (3rd, 4th and 6th).
Sophomore second baseman
Nikki Fulton, Hilton and Histed each had two-hit games. Seven different Warriors had an RBI in the contest.
WSU jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning of game two by recording four hits off NU starter Emily Somerville.
Fulton and White each singled, before senior third baseman
Alison Allen (Redford, Mich. / Farmington Hills Mercy) doubled in Fulton. White scored on a ground out, and Foreman's single plated Allen.
The Warriors scored twice the next inning on another four hits. Histed had a leadoff single and scored on White's triple down the left field line. Allen followed with an RBI single, then senior first baseman
Rebecca Ryan (Westland, Mich. / Dearborn Divine Child) greeted reliever Olivia Nicholas with a double.
Hilton singled and scored in the third on a base hit by Fulton.
A home run by Marisa Borkowski in the top of the fourth would be the lone NU run.
Wayne State ended the game with a trio of runs in the bottom of the fifth. Freshman
Shelby Spano (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Stevenson) had a leadoff double and scored on a single by Histed. Two pitches later, Fulton belted a two-run shot to center field.
Freshman

Three Northwood hurlers allowed 14 hits and nine runs (all earned) with no walks and no strikeouts.
Fulton led WSU by going 3-for-4 with three RBI, while White, Allen and Histed each had two hits.
Wayne State will conclude its six-game weekend road trip with a doubleheader on Sunday at Lake Superior State.
