DETROIT
-- The Wayne State University softball team (25-19 overall, 17-9 GLIAC) recorded a home doubleheader sweep of visiting Findlay (22-19 overall, 13-13 GLIAC) Wednesday afternoon on Strike Out Cancer Day at the WSU Softball Stadium.  WSU blanked the Oilers 5-0 in game one, then outscored UF 7-3 in the nightcap.

In the opener, the Warriors struck for four runs in the bottom of the first and reigning GLIAC Player of the Week Nikki Fulton (Stratford, Ont. / St. Michael Catholic S.S.), a sophomore second baseman, added a solo home run leading off the second.

After Findlay went 1-2-3 in the top of the first, Fulton walked and scored on a triple to center field by sophomore left fielder Logan White (Brantford, Ont. / Johnson C.V.I.).  Senior third baseman Alison Allen (Redford, Mich. / Farmington Hills Mercy) followed with an RBI single and WSU led 2-0 after 10 pitches.  Junior outfielder Stephanie Foreman (Cambridge, Ont. / Preston) and sophomore catcher Julie Ingratta (Markham, Ont.) had back-to-back bunt singles to load the bases.  Freshman designated player Shelby Spano (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Stevenson) contributed a two-run single.

WSU senior pitcher Sam Cain (Taylor, Mich. / Kennedy) went the distance for her third shutout of the season. She struck out three and walked three, while scattering five Oiler hits.

Brittany Dauterman pitched the first four innings for UF and allowed five earned runs on nine hits to fall to 6-5.

The top seven batters for the Warriors had at least one hit each with White going 3-for-4 with a runs scored, a triple and a stolen base.

Findlay scored in the bottom of the first in game two on a pair of singles sandwiched around a walk.

After a scoreless second frame, WSU took the lead for good with a pair of runs in the top of the third.

Freshman Emily Bryce (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester Adams) walked and advanced to second as senior shortstop Lauren Histed (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Utica) reached on an error.  With one out, White was hit by a 1-2 offering to load the bases, Allen drilled the next pitch between the legs of UF starter Tawna Whited (11-8) for an RBI single.  Foreman added an RBI single to center on the ensuing offering putting the Warriors ahead 2-1.

WSU increased its lead to 4-1 with a pair of runs in the fourth.  Freshman center fielder Shannon Hilton (Gilford, Ont. / Bradford) had a leadoff double and advanced to third on Histed's one-out single.  With two outs, White laced a single to right plating both Hilton and Histed.

Foreman walked leading off the fifth and went to second on Ingratta's sacrifice bunt.  She advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a ground out by Spano to make it 5-1.

In the bottom of the inning, UF's first three batters reached on an error and two singles.  Cain relieved WSU starter Briana Lee (Canton, Mich. / Salem) and retired the next three batters on a ground out and back-to-back strikeouts limiting the damage to one unearned run.

Wayne State tallied two insurance runs in the sixth to make it 7-2.  Histed singled with one out, and with two outs White was again hit by a pitch.  A wild pitch advanced both runners with both scoring on Allen's two-run single to right.

UF added an unearned run in the sixth to complete the scoring.

Lee evened her record at 6-6 by holding Findlay to two runs (one earned) on six hits in four-plus innings.  She struck out two and walked five.  Cain notched her second save of the year by allowing one unearned run and one hit in her three innings in the circle.  She struck out two and walked one.

Whited allowed seven runs (six earned) on eight hits with four strikeouts and three walks.

Allen and Histed each had two hits, with Allen recording three RBI.  She has tied her career high of 45 RBI set last year, which is two shy of the WSU single-season mark of 47 set by Amanda Jennings in 1998.

Wayne State will play its final regular-season road games this Friday and Saturday at GLIAC South Division rival Lake Erie, before concluding the regular-season at home on April 24th vs. Ashland on Senior Day.
