Findlay, Ohio – The Wayne State University softball team (31-20 overall) began the 2012 GLIAC tournament with a 2-1 victory over Tiffin University (26-24 overall) Friday afternoon in a game that took eight innings to decide the winner.

Both WSU senior hurler Sam Cain (Taylor, Mich./Kennedy) and Dragon pitcher Amber Young limited opposing batters to two hits through six innings.

The Warriors grabbed a 1-0 advantage in the bottom of the fifth as junior outfielder Stephanie Foreman (Cambridge, Ont./Preston) had a leadoff walk, and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Julie Ingratta (Markham, Ont.).  After a ground out, freshman catcher Emily Bryce (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams) smashed an RBI single up the middle scoring Foreman.

TU tied the game with two outs in the top of the seventh.  Payton Denman singled down the right field line and pinch-runner Katie Toomey advanced to second on a passed ball.  Pinch-hitter Lesy Herbert delivered an RBI single to right center.

Tiffin threatened in the top of the eight as Torrie Terry and Stephanie Bobotas sandwiched singles around a fly out, but Cain retired the next two batters.

In the bottom of the frame, senior shortstop Lauren Histed (Shelby Twp., Mich./Utica) drilled a one-out single up the middle and moved to second on a wild pitch.  Following a strikeout and a walk, senior third baseman Alison Allen (Redford, Mich./Farmington Hills Mercy) singled through the left side plating Histed.

Cain notched her 20th win of the season allowing just one unearned run on seven hits with two strikeouts and one walk.  Young fell to 11-13 despite limiting the Warriors to four hits and two earned runs.  She struck out eight and walked three.

Histed was the lone batter in the contest with a pair of hits.

Wayne State will face Ashland in a winner's bracket game later today.
