CHILLICOTHE, Ohio - Junior left-hander
Alex Pierse (Clinton Twp., Mich./De La Salle) tossed a three-hitter and struck out seven as the Wayne State University baseball team (32-17) defeated Lake Erie College (27-25),
6-1, to wrap up the second day of the GLIAC Tournament at V.A. Memorial Stadium.
Wayne State's second straight postseason win sets up a meeting with top-seeded Grand Valley State on Friday at 10:30 a.m. Lake Erie and Saginaw Valley State will play in an elimination game at 2:00.
Pierse (7-1) went the distance and allowed just one run on three hits and three walks. His teammates provided plenty of support as the offense totaled 13 hits and seven walks against five Storm hurlers.
Andrew Ciennik (Waterford, Mich./Mott) had his second career four-hit game and his first since May 8, 2009.
Chris Gebara (Troy, Mich.) also reached four times on two hits and two walks.
Kyle Vesey (Brighton, Mich.),
Brad Guenther (Ann Arbor, Mich./Saline) and
Justin DeFrancis (Rochester, Mich./Stoney Creek) all finished with two hits apiece as well. Guenther led off the bottom of the first inning with a triple and subsequently scored on a sacrifice fly by DeFrancis.
The Warriors opened the game up with four runs in the third as Ciennik hit an RBI single, Vesey doubled in a run and
Kasey Koster (Portage, Mich./Central) drove in a pair with a base hit. Wayne State sent all nine hitters to the plate in the inning.
Back-to-back singles with one out in the sixth by DeFrancis and Ciennik, and a Lake Erie error, put runners at the corners for
Kyle Zimmerman (Frankfort, Mich.), who brought in DeFrancis with a sacrifice fly.
Pierse did not allow a baserunner until the fourth inning, and did not permit a runner past second base until the seventh when Lake Erie scored its lone run on an RBI single by Sean Mathews.
Adam Beach (6-3) surrendered six runs (five earned) on 11 hits. He walked three and struck out one over 5.1 innings.
