Softball Begins NCAA Tournament With Setback

Indianapolis -- The Wayne State University softball team (34-21 overall) suffered a 10-0 setback to fourth-ranked University of Indianapolis (50-7) in the opening round of the 2012 NCAA Midwest Regional Tournament.

The Warriors managed just one hit, a single by senior third baseman Alison Allen (Redford, Mich./Farmington Hills Merycy) with two outs in the fourth inning. 

Greyhound starter Jennifer DeMotte struck out six and did not walk a batter in her four innings of work.

UIndy scored once in the first off WSU starter Sam Cain (Taylor, Mich./Kennedy) as GLVC Player of the Year Casey Williamson hit a solo home run to right center.

The Greyhounds tallied four runs in the second inning on three hits, three Warrior miscues and three walks to take a 5-0 lead.

Indianapolis added four runs in the third off WSU reliever Briana Lee (Canton, Mich./Salem), and added one more in the fourth.

WSU left fielder Logan White (Brantford, Ont. / Johnson C.V.I.) had the first six putouts defensively for the Warriors.

Wayne State will play Illinois-Springfield, a 1-0 loser to Northern Kentucky, in an elimination game at 3 p.m. on Saturday.  NKU and UIndy will square off at 10 am on Saturday in a winner's bracket contest.
