Football Falls 33-21 At Northern Michigan

Marquette, Mich. -- The Wayne State University football team (3-5 overall, 3-4 GLIAC) suffered its third consecutive setback falling 33-21 at Northern Michigan University on Saturday afternoon.

The Warriors took a 7-0 lead midway through the first period as sophomore quarterback Carl Roscoe (Kentwood, Mich./Kelloggsville) found senior wide receiver Dominique Maybanks (Muskegon, Mich.) behind the Wildcat secondary for a 37-yard scoring pass.

NMU scored the next 17 points before junior signal caller Doug Griffin (North Branch, Mich.) scored on a 54-yard keeper up the middle for WSU's longest run from scrimmage this season.  Griffin made his first collegiate start in the contest.

The Wildcats responded by scoring the next 16 points to increase their lead to 33-14.

Senior fullback Chet Privett (Sterling Hts., Mich./Warren De La Salle) scored on a one-yard plunge to complete the scoring.

Griffin led WSU on the ground with 91 yards on nine carries, while NMU's Wyatt Jurasin totaled a game-high 127 yards on 31 attempts.

Griffin completed 2-of-7 for 40 yards and was intercepted twice.  Roscoe passed for 78 yards on 6-of-9, while junior Sean Guinane (St. Joseph, Mich.) was 2-of-6 for 40 yards.

Wildcat Shaye Brown was 19-of-30 for 231 yards and one score.

NMU's Christian Jessie led all receivers with seven catches for 88 yards.  WSU wide outs Michael Johnson (Detroit, Mich./Clintondale) and Maybanks each had three receptions along with 46 and 53 receiving yards, respectively.

WSU senior linebacker Ed Viverette (Southfield, Mich./Brother Rice) recorded a game-high 12 tackles (2-10), while fellow linebackers Moe Davenport (Southfield, Mich.) and Nores Fradi (Dearborn Hts., Mich./Dearborn) each made 10 stops.

Wayne State will visit Ferris State for a noon kickoff next Saturday.
