DETROIT -- The Wayne State University volleyball team (11-18, 8-10 GLIAC) swept Lake Erie (2-26, 1-17 GLIAC) on Saturday afternoon inside the Matthaei Center. The Warriors' three seniors,
Nicole Arends (Ravenna, Mich.),
Kristen Bulkiewicz (LaSalle, Ont. / Sandwich) and
Jessica DeLeeuw (Harrison Twp., Mich. / L'Anse Creuse) were honored prior to the match for their hard work and commitment to the program.
WSU took set one 25-10, set two 25-15 and set three 25-8.
The Green & Gold led 7-4 to begin the opening set and extended its advantage to 11-4 on a kill from
Essence Jackson-Jones (Muskegon, Mich.). The Warriors ended the set on a 10-1 run to win 25-10.
Carlee Hunt (Waterford, Mich. / Walled Lake Northern) served nine of the final 10 points.
The solid play continued for WSU as it started set two leading 9-3 after a kill from
Kelsey Bonewits (Griffith, Ind.). Jackson-Jones connected for a kill to extend the home lead to 18-8 and WSU would cruise to a 25-15 set-two victory. The set ended on a service ace from Bulkiewicz.
WSU went on runs of 4-0, 10-0 and 8-0 to dominate the third set 25-8.
Mikayla Shell served the final seven points for the Warriors including two service aces.
Bulkiewicz led WSU with 12 kills and moved into second all-time in program history with 1,323 kills. Jackson-Jones posted 10 kills while
Madison Reeves (Indianapolis, Ind. / Avon) dished out 30 assists. As a team, WSU stifled the Lake Erie attack with 10.0 total team blocks. WSU hit .351 compared to LEC's -.104 hitting percentage.
Despite the 3-0 win, WSU will miss the GLIAC Tournament for the first time under head coach Phil Nickel. Saginaw Valley (9-9) won Saturday afternoon to secure the eighth and final seed in the upcoming tournament, which begins on Wednesday.
