Decatur, Ala. -- The Wayne State University softball squad (1-3 overall) snapped its three-game season-opening losing streak with a 5-4 triumph Saturday evening over Kentucky Wesleyan College (1-3 overall) to complete the second day of the 2013 Charger Chillout being hosted by the University of Alabama-Huntsville.
The Warriors struck first in the top of the first as junior
Logan White (Brantford, Ont. / Johnson C.V.I.) led off with a single, advanced to second on a one-out single by classmate
Nikki Fulton (Stratford, Ont. / St. Michael Catholic S.S.) then scored on a single by freshman
Lyndsay Butler (Cambridge, Ont. / Centennial C.V.I.).
The Panthers answered in the bottom of the inning with three runs ona two-run double and an RBI single.
In the top of the third, WSU took the lead with a four-run frame. Fulton led off with a walk, and Butler reached on a single. An error loaded the bases then sophomore
Emily Bryce (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester Adams) delivered a two-run single.
Stephanie Foreman (Cambridge, Ont. / Preston) scored on a sacrifice fly by
Shelby Spano () with Bryce crossing the plate on a passed ball.
KWC catcher Kaci Overgoenner homered in the sixth to complete the scoring.
Freshman hurler
Mackenzie Boehler (Saginaw, Mich. / Swan Valley) earned her first collegiate victory by limiting the Panthers four earned runs on five hits with three strikeouts.
White and Butler each had three hits for WSU, while Fulton added two hits.
Wayne State is scheduled to play Franklin Pierce and defending national champion Valdosta State on Sunday to conclude the 2013 Charger Chillout.
